We provide a comprehensive and critical review of Yates’ continuity correction for the normal approximation to the binomial distribution, in particular emphasizing its poor ability to approximate extreme tail probabilities. As an alternative method, we also review Cressie's finely tuned continuity correction. In addition, we demonstrate how Yates’ continuity correction is used to improve the coverage probability of binomial confidence limits, and propose new confidence limits by applying Cressie's continuity correction. These continuity correction methods are numerically compared and illustrated by data examples arising from industry and medicine.  相似文献

Two‐phase sampling is often used for estimating a population total or mean when the cost per unit of collecting auxiliary variables, x, is much smaller than the cost per unit of measuring a characteristic of interest, y. In the first phase, a large sample s1 is drawn according to a specific sampling design p(s1) , and auxiliary data x are observed for the units is1 . Given the first‐phase sample s1 , a second‐phase sample s2 is selected from s1 according to a specified sampling design {p(s2s1) } , and (y, x) is observed for the units is2 . In some cases, the population totals of some components of x may also be known. Two‐phase sampling is used for stratification at the second phase or both phases and for regression estimation. Horvitz–Thompson‐type variance estimators are used for variance estimation. However, the Horvitz–Thompson ( Horvitz & Thompson, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 1952 ) variance estimator in uni‐phase sampling is known to be highly unstable and may take negative values when the units are selected with unequal probabilities. On the other hand, the Sen–Yates–Grundy variance estimator is relatively stable and non‐negative for several unequal probability sampling designs with fixed sample sizes. In this paper, we extend the Sen–Yates–Grundy ( Sen , J. Ind. Soc. Agric. Statist. 1953; Yates & Grundy , J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 1953) variance estimator to two‐phase sampling, assuming fixed first‐phase sample size and fixed second‐phase sample size given the first‐phase sample. We apply the new variance estimators to two‐phase sampling designs with stratification at the second phase or both phases. We also develop Sen–Yates–Grundy‐type variance estimators of the two‐phase regression estimators that make use of the first‐phase auxiliary data and known population totals of some of the auxiliary variables.  相似文献

In this article, we propose an outlier detection approach in a multiple regression model using the properties of a difference-based variance estimator. This type of a difference-based variance estimator was originally used to estimate error variance in a non parametric regression model without estimating a non parametric function. This article first employed a difference-based error variance estimator to study the outlier detection problem in a multiple regression model. Our approach uses the leave-one-out type method based on difference-based error variance. The existing outlier detection approaches using the leave-one-out approach are highly affected by other outliers, while ours is not because our approach does not use the regression coefficient estimator. We compared our approach with several existing methods using a simulation study, suggesting the outperformance of our approach. The advantages of our approach are demonstrated using a real data application. Our approach can be extended to the non parametric regression model for outlier detection.  相似文献

Bandwidth plays an important role in determining the performance of nonparametric estimators, such as the local constant estimator. In this article, we propose a Bayesian approach to bandwidth estimation for local constant estimators of time-varying coefficients in time series models. We establish a large sample theory for the proposed bandwidth estimator and Bayesian estimators of the unknown parameters involved in the error density. A Monte Carlo simulation study shows that (i) the proposed Bayesian estimators for bandwidth and parameters in the error density have satisfactory finite sample performance; and (ii) our proposed Bayesian approach achieves better performance in estimating the bandwidths than the normal reference rule and cross-validation. Moreover, we apply our proposed Bayesian bandwidth estimation method for the time-varying coefficient models that explain Okun’s law and the relationship between consumption growth and income growth in the U.S. For each model, we also provide calibrated parametric forms of the time-varying coefficients. In this article, we develop a new Rosenthal Inequality for uniform random permutation sums of random variables with finite third moments and apply it to obtain a sharp non-uniform bound for the combinatorial central limit theorem using the Stein's method and the exchangeable pair techniques. Responsible gambling (RG) tools that guide electronic gaming machine (EGM) players to set a pre-set money limit on their gambling expenditures are known to reduce excessive gambling. However, not all EGM players who use a limit-setting RG tool will adhere to their limit. We hypothesized that limit adherence is facilitated by informing players that their limit is approaching (and when their limit is reached), but undermined by a financially focused self-concept (FFS). Accordingly, EGM players (N = 88) were provided seed funds to gamble with on a slot machine in a simulated virtual reality casino. They were randomly assigned to receive a limit reminder both when their limit was approaching and again when their limit was reached (experimental condition) or just when their limit was reached (control condition). Players in the experimental condition were more likely to stop playing before reaching their money limit compared to players in the control condition. However, this was observed among players who are low, but not high, in FFS. Unexpectedly, condition (control vs experimental) was unrelated to playing beyond the money limit and FFS did not moderate this relation. Results suggest that individual difference factors, like FFS, can undermine the utility of RG tools.  相似文献

Abstract

This study builds a moderated mediation model to empirically investigate the impacts of product modularity and supply chain integration (i.e. supplier, customer, and internal integration) on the flexibility and moderating effects of the product life cycle (i.e. growth and maturity stages) on the relationships using data collected from 204 Chinese manufacturers. The findings reveal that both supplier integration and internal integration mediate the relationship between product modularity and flexibility. Moreover, the indirect effect of product modularity on flexibility through supplier integration is stronger during the growth stage than during the maturity stage. There is no difference in the indirect effect of product modularity on flexibility through internal integration, which is significant in both the growth and maturity stages. In addition, the impact of product modularity on customer integration is significantly stronger, whereas that of customer integration on flexibility is significantly weaker during the growth stage than during the maturity stage.  相似文献

Estimation of a general multi-index model comprises determining the number of linear combinations of predictors (structural dimension) that are related to the response, estimating the loadings of each index vector, selecting the active predictors and estimating the underlying link function. These objectives are often achieved sequentially at different stages of the estimation process. In this study, we propose a unified estimation approach under a semi-parametric model framework to attain these estimation goals simultaneously. The proposed estimation method is more efficient and stable than many existing methods where the estimation error in the structural dimension may propagate to the estimation of the index vectors and variable selection stages. A detailed algorithm is provided to implement the proposed method. Comprehensive simulations and a real data analysis illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.  相似文献

In a Gauss–Markov Model (GMM) with fixed constraints, all the relevant estimators perfectly satisfy these constraints. As soon as they become stochastic, most estimators are allowed to satisfy them only approximately, thereby leaving room for nonvanishing residuals to describe the deviation from the prior information.

Sometimes, however, linear estimators may be preferred that are able to perfectly reproduce the prior information in form of stochastic constraints, including their variances and covariances. As typical example may be considered the case where a geodetic network ought to be densified without changing the higher-order point coordinates that are usually introduced together with their variances and (some) covariances. Traditional estimators are based on the “Helmert” or “S-transformation,” respectively an adaptation of the fixed-constraints Least-Squares estimator.

Here we show that neither approach generates the optimal reproducing estimator, which will be presented in detail and compared with the other reproducing estimators in terms of their MSE-risks.  相似文献
