The role of literacy instruction—and more specifically the ability to read critically—in democratic and Social Studies education has not been fully or explicitly explored. This gap is also strikingly evident in the reluctance of many Social Studies teachers to incorporate reading instruction into their practice. In this paper we describe our efforts to engage preservice middle grades Social Studies teachers in critical literacy practices as a first step toward more effectively and meaningfully integrating reading instruction into Social Studies education.  相似文献

大学阶段是大学生读书观形成并逐步稳定的关键时期,它对于大学生的心理健康、人格养成和社会适应性等都具有促进意义。通过对川内某理工高校图书馆学生借阅行为和借阅量的分析可知,大学生的信息渠道虽已日益多样化,但高校大学生读者仍然以到图书馆借阅作为利用图书馆的主要方式,同时也呈现出下降趋势。人文社会科学类图书占大学生图书总借阅量的62.87%,自然科学类图书占总借阅量的比例为38.13%,文学类图书高居图书借阅排行首位,计算机与外语类图书成为90后大学生学习利用最多的类别。这些规律对开展针对性的现代大学生思想政治工作具有重要意义。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

One hundred social service agency Websites were examined to find out how easily consumers could access posted information on them. Each Website was analyzed for multiple language availability, reading simplicity, reading comprehension, and disability access. This study found substantial barriers to Website access for social service consumers. The overwhelming majority of agency Websites failed one or more accessibility measures. Design issues that will make Website access easier such as disability standards, policy suggestions and best practices are discussed.  相似文献

One way that people learn, remember and communicate is visually. We combine past experiences with new visual information to construct meaning. In this study, elementary teachers introduced their students to the peoples and places of the ancient silk routes using illustrations from two children's picture books, Marco Polo, written by Gian Paolo Cesaerani and illustrated by Piero Ventura (1977), and We're Riding on a Caravan: An Adventure on the Silk Road (2005), written by Laurie Krebs and illustrated by Helen Cann. Students in the lower elementary grades were more literal than students in the higher grades in their observations of the books' illustrations. The older students had more knowledge of China and were able to construct more meaning from the illustrations than younger students. They were also able to recognize the illustrators' intent and manner of representation. Additionally the elementary teachers suggested contextualizing the activity within a study of China.  相似文献

In 2009 the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) released a position statement calling for the implementation of media literacy in social studies education. NCSS argues that if today's students are to become engaged citizens as adults, they must acquire the skills and knowledge associated with media literacy. Using this position statement as foundation, I developed a media literacy framework for use in the social studies classroom that applies prevailing theories on media and cultural studies. For consumers of media to engage in the practice of citizenship they need to acquire the tools needed to negotiate the waters of the many media texts that are produced. For a consumer of media texts to negotiate the meaning and influence of those texts, that consumer must use a framework that applies approaches that are historical, empirical, interpretive, and critical. As we shall see, these approaches are necessary if citizens are to engage effectively in a democracy that is flooded with such texts.  相似文献
