Some equivariant estimators of the dispersion matrix of a multivariate normal population are compared using the generalized Pitman nearness criterion based on the entropy loss function. It is shown that, under the group of lower triangular transformations, a best equivariant estimator does not exist. Existence of best estimators in certain subclasses are discussed and the performances of two commonly used estimators are compared. This paper deals with the estimation of the parameters of doubly truncated and singly truncated normal distributions when truncation points are known. We derive, for these families, a necessary and sufficient condition for the maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) to be finite. Furthermore, the probability of the MLE being infinite is positive. The likelihood ratio test (LRT) for the mean direction in the von Mises distribution is modified for possessing a common asymptotic distribution both for large sample size and for large concentration parameter. An estimator for location, given a sample of only four or five observations, is proposed. The underlying distribution on of the sample may (with probability p) be contaminated by an outlier from a rightly-skewed distribution. The estimator minimizes the maximum mean squared error over all values of p. In fact, there exists an estimator which is unbiased in both the outlier - free and extreme-outlier cases, but its mean square error is substantially higher than the mean squared error for the minimax estimator. This paper introduces a nonparametric test of symmetry for ranked-set samples to test the asymmetry of the underlying distribution. The test statistic is constructed from the Cramér-von Mises distance function which measures the distance between two probability models. The null distribution of the test statistic is established by constructing symmetric bootstrap samples from a given ranked-set sample.
