Mixture Models in View of Evidential Analysis

In some practical inferential situations, it is needed to mix some finite sort of distributions to fit an adequate model for multi-modal observations. In this article, using evidential analysis, we determine the sample size for supporting hypotheses about the mixture proportion and homogeneity. An Expectation-Maximization algorithm is used to evaluate the probability of strong misleading evidence based on modified likelihood ratio as a measure of support.     

The Good,the Bad and the Unhappy: The Cultural Meanings of Newspaper Reporting on Jackpot Winners

Accounts of jackpot winners and big gambling wins are common in Swedish newspapers. Analysis of over 2000 such newspaper articles reveals that their content is structured according to specific themes and cultural topics. Four such topics are identified: wealth as a test of morals and character, the social impact of wealth, the just and good world, and luck and the occult. Culturally structured narratives like these—which elaborate on mythological and moralistic schemes of good and evil, rewards and punishments, and which concern questions of human nature and social values—have a long history in folk tradition and in Christian moral teachings. Jackpot wins provide a discursive realm for moral and existential questions that, to some extent, fills a void left by the decline of traditional folklore and formal religion. Apparently, this discourse stimulates interest in games and constitutes one of the cultural roots of contemporary gambling.

汪曾祺所追求的超功利的率性自然的美学思想在启蒙与救亡的双重变奏的现代文学中注定是一个边缘性的存在。即使进入新时期,政治与文学的蜜月期也让以天下为己任关心民瘼的作家以牺牲文学的启蒙的审美一维而获得了启蒙的文学的功利性的轰动效应,但他的秉性气质、生活阅历都决定了他的超功利性的审美叙事风格与主流文坛的格格不入。到了文学与政治分离回归文学本体的九十年代,失去了对文学的敬畏和职业操守的新新作家在与钱共舞的欲望泥淖中将文学打扮成码字儿的职业,嗜短篇小说如命而且宣称自己只会写短篇小说不知长篇小说为何物的汪曾祺也只能在众声喧哗、多元共存的无名时代处于边缘的边缘的位置了,这种边缘化的叙事美学风格在叙事题材的边缘化、叙事观念的边缘化、叙事风格的边缘化等方面得到了鲜明的体现。     

Statistical Microcomputing—Like it is

A statistical software package is a collaborative effort between a program's authors and users. When statistical analysis took place exclusively on mainframe computers, the entire statistical community was served by some three to six major packages, which helped to ensure that program errors would be quickly uncovered and corrected. The current trend toward performing statistical analysis on microcomputers has resulted in an explosion of software of varying quality, with more than 200 packages for the IBM PC alone. Since all of these programs are competing for the same base of knowledgeable users, the number of sophisticated users per package is dramatically less than for mainframe packages; the net result is that problems in any particular package are more likely to go unnoticed and uncorrected. For example, the most widely used shareware package contains major errors that should cause it to be rejected out of hand, and three best-selling packages analyze unbalanced two-factor experiments using an approximate technique originally developed for hand calculation. Several strategies are offered to help author and user reveal any problems that might be present in their software.
