The Serialist’s Mentee: Commitment,Communication, Collaboration

Abstract

This article is based on a presentation from the 2019 North Carolina Serials Conference that described the changing nature of the mentor/mentee relationship in the face of shrinking budgets, downsized technical services departments, and the profession-wide commitment to recruiting librarians at an earlier stage in their professional career. Mentors have had to focus more on the training aspect of said relationships than they did in the past in order to create a fully autonomous colleague. In the presentation, we shared our goals, challenges, and experiences as mentor and mentee in this new paradigm.

Changing from Single to Separate Records: A Case Study from the University of Nevada,Reno

The University of Nevada, Reno Libraries made the decision in early 2012 to convert its bibliographic records from a single record approach, with multiple formats of a title on one bibliographic record, to a separate record approach, where each format receives its own record. This decision was several years in the making, as it was a change that would potentially require breaking apart more than 20,000 records. It would involve numerous staff from different departments and would require adjustments for all staff who worked with library users. This article will discuss the factors that pushed the UNR Libraries to make this decision to split its records and the challenges technical services staff faced in managing the project. The authors will present the different procedures developed for splitting monographic and serial records and the different tools that were used to make the process work: Millennium (especially the ERM and Global Update modules), MarcEdit, and Serials Solutions' MARC Updates service.

联机合作编目是网络环境下实现编目资源共享,降低编目成本的最有效的编目方式。分析了国内联机合作编目的现状和发展趋势,阐述了联合编目存在的问题和联合编目带来的利与弊。提出了联合编目工作应建立更为广泛的联合体,统一认识,统一规则,真正实现编目资源共享的目标。     

Me and My Shadow: Observation,Documentation, and Analysis of Serials and Electronic Resources Workflow

Abstract

Librarians in the Metadata & Cataloging Department at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries embarked on a comprehensive project to document and review the Libraries' serials and electronic resources workflow with the goals of introducing greater efficiency, clarity, and simplicity into processes across the serials unit and of increasing training opportunities for department-wide understanding of the serials lifecycle. This paper examines the method used to observe and collect information about serials and electronic resources work, the process of synthesizing that information into a graphical representation of the serials lifecycle, and the workflow analysis undertaken to introduce improved serials processes. The value of the project is demonstrated through a discussion of efforts for workflow education, analysis, and improvement at the NCSU Libraries directly instigated by review of the process documentation by technical services staff members.     

Scoring the Quality of E-Serials MARC Records Using Java

ABSTRACT

In 2015, the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC) adopted a policy of cataloging electronic serials in the online catalog to represent the Library's large electronic journal holdings. Historically there had been no consistent policy of cataloging e-serials at UIUC, so this decision also required retroactive cataloging of the Library's existing holdings. In order to add the more than 100,000 titles to which the library has access, batch searching and bulk loading records are necessary. This can be particularly challenging with serials records, due to bibliographic changes (such as title and publisher) and record duplication in OCLC WorldCat. This column describes a Java program, written by the author, which aids in selecting high-quality records from batch searches to be bulk loaded into the catalog. The program scores the quality of Machine-Readable Cataloging Record (MARC) records based on data in a select number of fields and discards records that fail to meet minimum criteria, such as correct format or language of cataloging. The program ultimately ensures that certain base criteria are met, while creating more efficiency in the process of bulk loading e-serials records.     

外国人名在科技期刊中的识别与规范表达

针对外国人名在我国科技期刊中出现的书写和著录不规范问题,对外国人名在10种英文原版期刊中的著录情况进行比较分析,并根据我国对外国人名在出版物中著录的相关规定,归纳出外国人名在科技期刊的（总）目次表、论文署名、正文、著者索引、致谢项和参考文献表中的书写和著录特点及规律。这项研究,将有助于科技工作者和出版工作者在撰写和编辑科技论文时更好地遵循外国人名在科技期刊中的著录规则。     

Resource Description and Access: 2014 Update

This article summarizes a presentation given March 14, 2014, at the 23rd Annual North Carolina Serials Conference by Kurt C. Blythe and Christee Pascale. The presenters reviewed the most important developments in RDA from 2013/2014 from a serialist point of view. Additionally, the lessons learned from training for and implementing RDA at North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Libraries were described by Pascale and Blythe respectively.

通过对<中国文献编目规则>及<英美编目条例第二版>修订本在著录级次上的比较、分析,从四个方面指出了<中国文献编目规则>相关规定的不足之处,以期为<中国文献编目规则>的再次修订提供参考.
