In this paper, the exhaustive search principle used in functional trees for classifying densities is shown to select variables with more split points. A new variable selection scheme is proposed to correct this bias. The Pearson chi-squared tests for associated two-way contingency tables are used to select the variables. Through simulation, we show that the new method can control bias and is more powerful in selecting split variable.  相似文献

Health expectancies of the states ‘Disability-free’ and ‘Disabled’ are estimated for Australian females and males aged 60 and over, both by cohort from 1980 and current for survey years 1981, 1988, 1993 and 1998. Modifications of recently developed logistic regression techniques are used rather than the standard 1971 method due to Sullivan. Results from the three later surveys are broadly similar and differ in important respects from those of the 1981 survey. Based on the last three surveys our estimates support the view that, depending on age, two-thirds or more of the increase in female life expectancy over the decade 1988–1998 is spent in the Disabled state. The situation is worse for elderly men, for whom all of the increased years of expected life are estimated to be spent in the Disabled state. The findings do not support rectangularization of the survival curve or Disability-free survival curve.  相似文献

A Bayesian nonparametric estimate of the survival distribution is derived under a particular sampling scheme for grouped data that includes the possibility of censoring. The estimate uses the prior information to smooth the data, giving an estimate which is continuous. As special cases survival estimates for life tables are obtained and the estimate of Susarla and Van Ryzin (1976) is derived. As the weight of the prior information tends to zero, the Bayesian estimate reduces to a continuous version of the nonparametric maximum-likelihood estimate. An empirical Bayes modification of the procedure is illustrated on a data set from Cutler and Ederer (1958).  相似文献

Statistical database management systems keep raw, elementary and/or aggregated data and include query languages with facilities to calculate various statistics from this data. In this article we examine statistical database query languages with respect to the criteria identified and taxonomy developed in Ozsoyoglu and Ozsoyoglu (1985b). The criteria include statistical metadata and objects, aggregation features and interface to statistical packages. The taxonomy of statistical database query languages classifies them with respect to the data model used, the type of user interface and method of implementation. Temporal databases are rich sources of data for statistical analysis. Aggregation features of temporal query languages, as well as the issues in calculating aggregates from temporal data, are also examined.  相似文献

Measuring and explaining the effects of mortality changes on life expectancy has been discussed for the past three decades. Different approaches have been proposed using discrete or continuous methods. Two basic ideas underlie these approaches. The first compares two different mortality schedules and quantifies the contribution of each age group to the increase in life expectancy. The second analyzes how the progress in the mortality schedule translates into progress in life expectancy. This paper discusses and compares the approaches proposed by the United Nations (1982), Arriaga (1984), Pollard (1982, 1988), and Vaupel (1986), identifying their problems, advantages, and the types of situations where each one can best be applied.  相似文献

Apart from having intrinsic mathematical interest, order statistics are also useful in the solution of many applied sampling and analysis problems. For a general review of the properties and uses of order statistics, see David (1981). This paper provides tabulations of means and variances of certain order statistics from the gamma distribution, for parameter values not previously available. The work was motivated by a particular quota sampling problem, for which existing tables are not adequate. The solution to this sampling problem actually requires the moments of the highest order statistic within a given set; however the calculation algorithm used involves a recurrence relation, which causes all the lower order statistics to be calculated first. Therefore we took the opportunity to develop more extensive tables for the gamma order statistic moments in general. Our tables provide values for the order statistic moments which were not available in previous tables, notably those for higher values of m, the gamma distribution shape parameter. However we have also retained the corresponding statistics for lower values of m, first to allow for checking accuracy of the computtions agtainst previous tables, and second to provide an integrated presentation of our new results with the previously known values in a consistent format  相似文献

We study the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and body mass index (BMI) when contingency tables are constructed from the several U.S. counties, where BMD has three levels (normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis) and BMI has four levels (underweight, normal, overweight and obese). We use the Bayes factor (posterior odds divided by prior odds or equivalently the ratio of the marginal likelihoods) to construct the new test. Like the chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test, we have a direct Bayes test which is a standard test using data from each county. In our main contribution, for each county techniques of small area estimation are used to borrow strength across counties and a pooled test of independence of BMD and BMI is obtained using a hierarchical Bayesian model. Our pooled Bayes test is computed by performing a Monte Carlo integration using random samples rather than Gibbs samples. We have seen important differences among the pooled Bayes test, direct Bayes test and the Cressie-Read test that allows for some degree of sparseness, when the degree of evidence against independence is studied. As expected, we also found that the direct Bayes test is sensitive to the prior specifications but the pooled Bayes test is not so sensitive. Moreover, the pooled Bayes test has competitive power properties, and it is superior when the cell counts are small to moderate.  相似文献

For the situation of several 2 × 2 tables two approaches are presented to jackknife the well-known estimators of a common odds ratio proposed by Woolf (1955) and by Mantel and Haenszel (1959). Five tests of homogeneity for a 2x(k+l) contingency table are compared using Monte Carlo techniques. For these studiesit is assumed that k becomes large in such a way that thecontingency table is sparse for 2xk of the cells, but the sample size in two of the cells remains large. The test statistics studied are: the chi-square approximation to the Pearson test statistic, the chi-square approximation to the likelihood ratio statistic, the normal approximation to Zelterman's (1984)the normal approximation to Pearson's chi-square, and the normal approximation to the likelihood ratio statistic. For the range of parameters studied the chi-square approximation to Pearson's statistic performs consistently well with regard to its size and power.  相似文献
