Commentaries are informative essays dealing with viewpoints of statistical practice, statistical education, and other topics considered to be of general interest to the broad readership of The American Statistician. Commentaries are similar in spirit to Letters to the Editor, but they involve longer discussions of background, issues, and perspectives. All commentaries will be refereed for their merit and compatibility with these criteria.

Proper methodology for the analysis of covariance for experiments designed in a split-plot or split-block design is not found in the statistical literature. Analyses for these designs are often performed incompletely or even incorrectly. This is especially true when popular statistical computer software packages are used for the analysis of these designs. This article provides several appropriate models, ANOVA tables, and standard errors for comparisons from experiments arranged in a standard split-plot, split–split-plot, or split-block design where a covariate has been measured on the smallest size experimental unit.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is threefold. First, variance components testing for ANOVA ‐type mixed models is considered, in which response may not be divided into independent sub‐vectors, whereas most of existing methods are for models where response can be divided into independent sub‐vectors. Second, testing that a certain subset of variance components is zero. Third, as normality is often violated in practice, it is desirable to construct tests under very mild assumptions. To achieve these goals, an adaptive difference‐based test and an adaptive trace‐based test are constructed. The test statistics are asymptotically normal under the null hypothesis, are consistent against all global alternatives and can detect local alternatives distinct from the null at a rate as close to n ? 1 ∕ 2 as possible with n being the sample size. Moreover, when the dimensions of variance components in different sets are bounded, we develop a test with chi‐square as its limiting null distribution. The finite sample performance of the tests is examined via simulations, and a real data set is analysed for illustration.  相似文献

Fujikoshi (1982) obtained the necessary and sufficient conditions for the increased number of variables in the two sets of vectors not affecting the original nonzero canonical correlations and used these to obtain the likelihood ratio test procedure. He assumed a nonsingular covariance matrix due to random variables. Here, we study the same problem when the covariance matrix is singular and establish some further results. In this study, we note that the unit canonical correlations have to be separated in some of the situations. These results are valid for complex random vector variables and in some situations, the test for redundancy is given for complex random variables.  相似文献

Methods for constructing simultaneous confidence intervals for contrasts of treatment effects in analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models are discussed and compared. A simple procedure is given by which, under a normality assumption made on the covariates, any method appropriate in an analysis of variance (ANOVA) may be applied to a corresponding ANCOVA by means of a simple adjustment of the required critical values. Some new algebra on pattern and transition matrices is used to determine the degrees of freedom and the parameter matrix, if the distribution of a linear sum of Wishart matrices is approximated by a single Wishart distribution. Necessary and sufficient conditions on the observation covariance structure and on the set of linear transformations are given for which the distribution of the multivariate maximum squared - radii statistic for detecting a single multivariate outlier is invariant from the distribution assuming the usual independence covariance structure. Thus, we extend the work of Baksalary and Puntanen (1990), who have given necessary and sufficient conditions for an independence-distribution-preserving covariance structure for Grubbs' statistic for detecting a univariate outlier. We also extend the work of Marco, Young, and Turner (1987) and Pavur and Young (1991), who have given sufficient conditions for an independence-distribution-preserving dependency structure for the multivariate squared - radii statistic.  相似文献

One of the surprising decision-theoretic results Charles Stein discovered is the inadmissibility of the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estirnator(UMVUE) of the variance of a normal distribution with an unknown mean. Some methods for deriving estimators better than the UMVUE were given by Stein. Brown, Brewster and Zidek. Recently Kubokawa established a novel approach, called the IERD method, by use of which one gets a unified class of improved estimators including their previous procedures. This paper gives a review for a series of these decision-theoretical developments as well as surveys the study of the variance-estimation problem from various aspects. Related to this issue, the paper enumerates several topics with the situations where the usual plain estimators are required to be shrunken or modified, and gives reasonable procedures improving the usual ones through the IERD method.  相似文献
