AN APPROACH TO THE SAMPLING THEOREM FOR CONTINUOUS TIME PROCESSES

In this paper we extend the sampling theorem to the full spectrum of weakly stationary stochastic processes. The mean square approximation error bound is also given.

Le temps de l'activité de la caissière : entre logique productive et logique de service

At first sight, the worktime put in by cashiers at checkout counters seems homogeneous, continuous and repetitive. An empirical study of hypermarket cashiers in France shows, on the contrary, that the time spent working is relatively discontinuous and diversified. It is similar to the time on the job put in by semiskilled workers in industry. What characterizes cashiers' work is their having to manage flows of both products and customers. Their worktime can, therefore, be understood as a compromise that comes out of balancing productivity with human relations, a compromise that sometimes causes conflict. By acquiring an “incorporated know-how”, cashiers manage to fill their assignment.     

Strong convergence properties for partial sums of asymptotically negatively associated random vectors in Hilbert spaces

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the almost sure convergence for partial sums of asymptotically negatively associated (ANA, for short) random vectors in Hilbert spaces. The Khintchine-Kolmogorov type convergence theorem, three series theorem and the Kolmogorov type strong law of large numbers for partial sums of ANA random vectors in Hilbert spaces are obtained. The results obtained in the paper generalize some corresponding ones for independent random vectors and negatively associated random vectors in Hilbert spaces.

Appropriation et régulation des innovations biotechnologiques : pour une comparaison transatlantique

This article analyzes two biotechnological innovations — the tests of tracking the genetic risks of diseases and the transgenic organisms — and explores the controversies concerning the status of these new knowledges and the ways there are applied. It shows how these innovations were received in a different way in the United States and in France. The market regulation, which is strong in the USA is problematic in France. It is marginalized by the professional regulation in the case of the genetic tests. And in the other case it is limited by the control of the state, which constitutes some resources for the mobilization of the civil society against transgenic organisms. Finally the comparison consolidates the hypothesis of the emergence of a new regime of production of the knowledge, specified by the tension between a “market” regulation and a “consumerist-civic” regulation.

Computational Comparison Studies of Quadratic Assignment Like Formulations for the In Silico Sequence Selection Problem in De Novo Protein Design

In this paper an O(n²) mathematical formulation for in silico sequence selection in de novo protein design proposed by Klepeis et al. (2003, 2004), in which the number of additional variables and linear constraints scales with the square of the number of binary variables, is compared to three O(n) formulations. It is found that the O(n²) formulation is superior to the O(n) formulations on most sequence search spaces. The superiority of the O(n²) formulation is due to the reformulation linearization techniques (RLTs), since the O(n²) formulation without RLTs is found to be computationally less efficient than the O(n) formulations. In addition, new algorithmic enhancing components of RLTs with inequality constraints, triangle inequalities, and Dead-End Elimination (DEE) type preprocessing are added to the O(n²) formulation. The current best O(n²) formulation, which is the original formulation from Klepeis et al. (2003, 2004) plus DEE type preprocessing, is proposed for in silico sequence search. For a test problem with a search space of 3.4×10⁴⁵ sequences, this new improved model is able to reduce the required CPU time by 67%.     

A class of time-reversible semi-Markov processes

In this paper, we investigate a class of semi-Markov processes, first touched upon lightly in Pyke and Schaufele (1966), that are time-reversible. Results that are difficult to prove for semi-Markov processes in general are often made more simple for time-reversible semi-Markov processes, and some examples are given.
