Probability plots are often used to estimate the parameters of distributions. Using large sample properties of the empirical distribution function and order statistics, weights to stabilize the variance in order to perform weighted least squares regression are derived. Weighted least squares regression is then applied to the estimation of the parameters of the Weibull, and the Gumbel distribution. The weights are independent of the parameters of the distributions considered. Monte Carlo simulation shows that the weighted least-squares estimators outperform the usual least-squares estimators totally, especially in small samples. 相似文献

ABSTRACTRestricted canonical correlation analysis and the lasso shrinkage method were paired together for canonical correlation analysis with non-negativity restrictions on datasets, where a sample size is much smaller than the number of variables. The method was implemented in an alternating least-squares algorithm and applied to cross-language information retrieval on a dataset with aligned documents in eight languages. A set of experiments was ran to evaluate the method and compare it to other methods in the field. 相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating the two parameters of the discrete Good distribution. We first show that the sufficient statistics for the parameters are the arithmetic and the geometric means. The maximum likelihood estimators (MLE's) of the parameters are obtained by solving numerically a system of equations involving the Lerch zeta function and the sufficient statistics. We find an expression for the asymptotic variance-covariance matrix of the MLE's, which can be evaluated numerically. We show that the probability mass function satisfies a simple recurrence equation linear in the two parameters, and propose the quadratic distance estimator (QDE) which can be computed with an ineratively reweighted least-squares algorithm. the QDE is easy to calculate and admits a simple expression for its asymptotic variance-covariance matrix. We compute this matrix for the MLE's and the QDE for various values of the parameters and see that the QDE has very high asymptotic efficiency. Finally, we present a numerical example. 相似文献

The problem of multivariate regression modelling in the presence of heterogeneous data is dealt to address the relevant issue of the influence of such heterogeneity in assessing the linear relations between responses and explanatory variables. In spite of its popularity, clusterwise regression is not designed to identify the linear relationships within ‘homogeneous’ clusters exhibiting internal cohesion and external separation. A within-clusterwise regression is introduced to achieve this aim and, since the possible presence of a linear relation ‘between’ clusters should be also taken into account, a general regression model is introduced to account for both the between-cluster and the within-cluster regression variation. Some decompositions of the variance of the responses accounted for are also given, the least-squares estimation of the parameters is derived, together with an appropriate coordinate descent algorithms and the performance of the proposed methodology is evaluated in different datasets. 相似文献

The strong consistency of the least-squares estimates in regression models is obtained when the errors are i.i.d. with absolute moment of order r, 0<r? 2. The assumptions presented for the random error sequence will permit us to obtain improvements of the conditions on the regressors in order to obtain the strong consistency of the least-squares estimates in linear and nonlinear regression models. 相似文献

When there are more than two treatments under comparison, we may consider the use of the incomplete block crossover design (IBCD) to save the number of patients needed for a parallel groups design and reduce the duration of a crossover trial. We develop an asymptotic procedure for simultaneously testing equality of two treatments versus a control treatment (or placebo) in frequency data under the IBCD with two periods. We derive a sample size calculation procedure for the desired power of detecting the given treatment effects at a nominal-level and suggest a simple ad hoc adjustment procedure to improve the accuracy of the sample size determination when the resulting minimum required number of patients is not large. We employ Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the finite-sample performance of the proposed test, the accuracy of the sample size calculation procedure, and that with the simple ad hoc adjustment suggested here. We use the data taken as a part of a crossover trial comparing the number of exacerbations between using salbutamol or salmeterol and a placebo in asthma patients to illustrate the sample size calculation procedure. 相似文献

As a compromise between parametric regression and nonparametric regression, partially linear models are frequently used in statistical modelling. This article considers statistical inference for this semiparametric model when the linear covariate is measured with additive error and some additional linear restrictions on the parametric component are assumed to hold. We propose a restricted corrected profile least-squares estimator for the parametric component, and study the asymptotic normality of the estimator. To test hypothesis on the parametric component, we construct a Wald test statistic and obtain its limiting distribution. Some simulation studies are conducted to illustrate our approaches. 相似文献

The nonparametric component in a partially linear model is estimated by a linear combination of fixed-knot cubic B-splines with a second-order difference penalty on the adjacent B-spline coefficients. The resulting penalized least-squares estimator is used to construct two Wald-type spline-based test statistics for the null hypothesis of the linearity of the nonparametric function. When the number of knots is fixed, the first test statistic asymptotically has the distribution of a linear combination of independent chi-squared random variables, each with one degree of freedom, under the null hypothesis. The smoothing parameter is determined by specifying a value for the asymptotically expected value of the test statistic under the null hypothesis. When the number of knots is fixed and under the null hypothesis, the second test statistic asymptotically has a chi-squared distribution with K=q+2 degrees of freedom, where q is the number of knots used for estimation. The power performances of the two proposed tests are investigated via simulation experiments, and the practicality of the proposed methodology is illustrated using a real-life data set. 相似文献
