Exact confidence intervals for a proportion of total variance, based on pivotal quantities, only exist for mixed linear models having two variance components. Generalized confidence intervals (GCIs) introduced by Weerahandi [1993. Generalized confidence intervals (Corr: 94V89 p726). J. Am. Statist. Assoc. 88, 899–905] are based on generalized pivotal quantities (GPQs) and can be constructed for a much wider range of models. In this paper, the author investigates the coverage probabilities, as well as the utility of GCIs, for a proportion of total variance in mixed linear models having more than two variance components. Particular attention is given to the formation of GPQs and GCIs in mixed linear models having three variance components in situations where the data exhibit complete balance, partial balance, and partial imbalance. The GCI procedure is quite general and provides a useful method to construct confidence intervals in a variety of applications. 相似文献

Summary. In health sciences, medicine and social sciences linear mixed effects models are often used to analyse time-structured data. The search for optimal designs for these models is often hampered by two problems. The first problem is that these designs are only locally optimal. The second problem is that an optimal design for one model may not be optimal for other models. In this paper the maximin principle is adopted to handle both problems, simultaneously. The maximin criterion is formulated by means of a relative efficiency measure, which gives an indication of how much efficiency is lost when the uncertainty about the models over a prior domain of parameters is taken into account. The procedure is illustrated by means of three growth studies. Results are presented for a vocabulary growth study from education, a bone gain study from medical research and an epidemiological decline in height study. It is shown that, for the mixed effects polynomial models that are applied to these studies, the maximin designs remain highly efficient for different sets of models and combinations of parameter values. 相似文献

In early clinical development of new medicines, a single‐arm study with a limited number of patients is often used to provide a preliminary assessment of a response rate. A multi‐stage design may be indicated, especially when the first stage should only include very few patients so as to enable rapid identification of an ineffective drug. We used decision rules based on several types of nominal confidence intervals to evaluate a three‐stage design for a study that includes at most 30 patients. For each decision rule, we used exact binomial calculations to determine the probability of continuing to further stages as well as to evaluate Type I and Type II error rates. Examples are provided to illustrate the methods for evaluating alternative decision rules and to provide guidance on how to extend the methods to situations with modifications to the number of stages or number of patients per stage in the study design. Block designs to which have been added a number of singly-replicated treatments, known as secondary treatments, are particularly useful for experiments where only small amounts of material are available for some treatments, for example new plant varieties. The designs are of particular use in the microarray situation. Such designs are known as 'augmented designs'. This paper obtains the properties of these designs and shows that, with an equal number of secondary treatments in each block, the A-optimal design is obtained by using the A-optimal design for the original block design. It develops formulae for the variance of treatment comparisons, for both the primary and the secondary treatments. A number of examples are used to illustrate the results. 相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of finding nearly D-optimal designs for multivariate quadratic regression on a cube which take as few observations as possible and still allow estimation of all parameters. It is shown that among the class of all such designs taking as many observations as possible on the corners of the cube there is one which is asymptotically efficient as the dimension of the cube increases. Methods for constructing designs in this class, using balanced arrays, are given. It is shown that the designs so constructed for dimensions ≤6 compare well with existing computer generated designs, and in dimensions 5 and 6 are better than those in literature prior to 1978. 相似文献

In this paper the analysis of the class of block designs whose C matrix can be expressed in terms of the Kronecker product of some elementary matrices is considered. The analysis utilizes a basic result concerning the spectral decomposition of the Kronecker product of symmetric matrices in terms of the spectral decomposition of the component matrices involved in the Kronecker product. The property (A) of Kurkjian and Zelen (1963) is generalised and the analysis of generalised property (A) designs is given. It is proved that a design is balanced factorially if and only if it is a generalised property (A) design. A method of analysis of Kronecker product block designs whose component designs are equi-replicate and proper is also suggested. 相似文献
