A deflated indicators approach for estimating second-order reflective models through PLS-PM: an empirical illustration

The paper provides a procedure aimed at obtaining more interpretable second-order models estimated with the partial least squares-path modeling. Advantages in interpretation stem from the separation of the two sources of influence on the data. As a matter of fact, in hierarchical models effects on manifest variables (MVs) are assigned to both first-order (specific) factors and second-order (general) factors. In order to separate these overlapping contributions, MVs are deflated from the effect of the specific latent variables (LVs) and used as indicators of the second-order LV. A case study is presented in order to illustrate the application of the proposed method.

Rank statistics expressible as integrals under P–P-plots and receiver operating characteristic curves

Given a probability measure on the unit square, the measure of the region under an empirical P – P -plot defines a two-sample rank statistic. Instances include trimmed and censored versions of the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon statistic and a class of statistics with applications in the analysis of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. A large sample distribution for such a statistic is obtained, which is valid under sampling from general populations. Explicit results are presented for comparing arbitrary quantile segments of two populations. The results are not restricted to continuous data and incorporate adjustments for tied values in the discrete case. A multivariate version of the large sample distribution extends the class of tractable statistics in ROC analysis and facilitates the use of methods based on partial areas when the data are discrete.

Cramér‐von Mises regression

Consider a linear regression model with unknown regression parameters β₀ and independent errors of unknown distribution. Block the observations into q groups whose independent variables have a common value and measure the homogeneity of the blocks of residuals by a Cramér‐von Mises q‐sample statistic T_q(β). This statistic is designed so that its expected value as a function of the chosen regression parameter β has a minimum value of zero precisely at the true value β₀. The minimizer β of T_q(β) over all β is shown to be a consistent estimate of β₀. It is also shown that the bootstrap distribution of T_q(β₀) can be used to do a lack of fit test of the regression model and to construct a confidence region for β₀     

Approximations of Variances and Covariances for Order Statistics from the Standard Extreme Value Distribution

We consider simple approximations of variances and covariances for order statistics from the standard extreme value distribution. Exact values and simulation results of the variances and covariances for certain sample sizes are used to determine the validity of the suggested approximations.
