A survey of business schools was conducted to obtain information about the current state of the teaching of business statistics to students enrolled in M.B.A. degree programs. The survey was undertaken for and presented at a June 1986 conference on “Making Statistics More Effective in Schools of Business,” held at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. Information was elicited concerning both the required statistics sequence and elective statistics courses for M.B.A. students, as well as computer usage in these courses. In this article, we present the problem of selecting a good stochastic system with high probability and minimum total simulation cost when the number of alternatives is very large. We propose a sequential approach that starts with the Ordinal Optimization procedure to select a subset that overlaps with the set of the actual best m% systems with high probability. Then we use Optimal Computing Budget Allocation to allocate the available computing budget in a way that maximizes the Probability of Correct Selection. This is followed by a Subset Selection procedure to get a smaller subset that contains the best system among the subset that is selected before. Finally, the Indifference-Zone procedure is used to select the best system among the survivors in the previous stage. The numerical test involved with all these procedures shows the results for selecting a good stochastic system with high probability and a minimum number of simulation samples, when the number of alternatives is large. The results also show that the proposed approach is able to identify a good system in a very short simulation time.  相似文献

A second course in statistics, for nonstatisticians who will use packaged statistical software in their work, is outlined. The course is directed toward the wise choice, use, and evaluation of statistical computer packages. The goal of the course is to train educated consumers of statistical programs. Particular attention is paid to computer-based data analysis, interpretation of output, comparison of competing packages, and statistical problems that arise when computers are employed to analyze large data sets.  相似文献

A wish list of desirable statistical computing capabilities is presented. This may help one question which of these capabilities can be satisfied by existing packages, which might be met through reasonable extensions to these packages, which might require substantial new development, and which ought to be supplied by the computing environment rather than the packages. These questions are explored, taking into account the nature of the statistical work and the choices presented by technology. The evolution of computers is currently in a period of rapid change, stimulated by radically cheaper and smaller devices for processing and memory. These changes are certain to provide major opportunities and challenges for the use of computers in statistics. This article looks at history and current trends, in both general computing and statistical computing, with the goal of identifying key features and requirements for the near future. A discussion of the S language developed at Bell Laboratories illustrates some program design principles that can make future work on statistical programs more effective and more valuable.  相似文献

This department includes the two sections New Developments in Statistical Computing and Statistical Computing Software Reviews; suitable contents for each of these sections is described under the respective section heading. Articles submitted for the department, outside the two sections, should not be highly technical and should be relevant to the teaching or practice of statistical computing.

This section is similar in organization to a Book Review section in other journals; however, software of interest to statisticians is the subject of review here. Emphasis is on software for microcomputers. Programs that operate only in larger mainframe computers will seldom receive review. Normally, producers of programs make a copy of their product available to the Section Editor, who then selects one or more persons to test the product and prepare a review.
