A difference-based variance estimator is proposed for nonparametric regression in complex surveys. By using a combined inference framework, the estimator is shown to be asymptotically normal and to converge to the true variance at a parametric rate. We propose a strongly root-n consistent simulation-based estimator for the generalized linear mixed models. This estimator is constructed based on the first two marginal moments of the response variables, and it allows the random effects to have any parametric distribution (not necessarily normal). Consistency and asymptotic normality for the proposed estimator are derived under fairly general regularity conditions. We also demonstrate that this estimator has a bounded influence function and that it is robust against data outliers. A bias correction technique is proposed to reduce the finite sample bias in the estimation of variance components. Residuals are frequently used to evaluate the validity of the assumptions of statistical models and may also be employed as tools for model selection. In this paper, we consider residuals and their limiting properties in the linear mixed measurement error models. Also, we develop types of residuals for these models and then review some of the residual analysis techniques. Further, by using the definition of generalized leverage, we derive generalized leverage matrices for identification of high-leverage points for these models. In a recent paper by Mao, Shi and Sun that appeared in Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, the authors discuss, among other approaches, the construction of exact confidence intervals for the underlying parameters by ‘pivoting the cumulative distribution functions’ of the corresponding maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs). The authors assume that this method is applicable without providing the appropriate justification. In this short note the two requirements for the applicability of this method are discussed, namely, the stochastic monotonicity of the MLEs and the existence of solutions to the equations defining the exact confidence interval's endpoints. 相似文献

Consider the situation where measurements are taken at two different times and let Mj(x) be some conditional robust measure of location associated with the random variable Y at time j, given that some covariate X=x. The goal is to test H0: M1(x)=M2(x) for each x∈ x1,?…?, xK such that the probability of one or more Type I errors is less than α, where x1,?…?, xK are K specified values of the covariate. The paper reports simulation results comparing two methods aimed at accomplishing this goal without specifying some parametric form for the regression line. The first method is based on a simple modification of the method in Wilcox [Introduction to robust estimation and hypothesis testing. 3rd ed. San Diego, CA: Academic Press; 2012, Section 11.11.1]. The main result here is that the second method, which has never been studied, can have higher power, sometimes substantially so. Data from the Well Elderly 2 study, which motivated this paper, are used to illustrate that the alternative approach can make a practical difference. Streaming feature selection is a greedy approach to variable selection that evaluates potential explanatory variables sequentially. It selects significant features as soon as they are discovered rather than testing them all and picking the best one. Because it is so greedy, streaming selection can rapidly explore large collections of features. If significance is defined by an alpha investing protocol, then the rate of false discoveries will be controlled. The focus of attention in variable selection, however, should be on fit rather than hypothesis testing. Little is known, however, about the risk of estimators produced by streaming selection and how the configuration of these estimators influences the risk. To meet these needs, we provide a computational framework based on stochastic dynamic programming that allows fast calculation of the minimax risk of a sequential estimator relative to an alternative. The alternative can be data driven or derived from an oracle. This framework allows us to compute and contrast the risk inflation of sequential estimators derived from various alpha investing rules. We find that a universal investing rule performs well over a variety of models and that estimators allowed to have larger than conventional rates of false discoveries produce generally smaller risk. 相似文献

A ranked set sampling procedure with unequal samples for positively skew distributions (RSSUS) is proposed and used to estimate the population mean. The estimators based on RSSUS are compared with the estimators based on ranked set sampling (RSS) and median ranked set sampling (MRSS) procedures. Linear mixed models are widely used when multiple correlated measurements are made on each unit of interest. In many applications, the units may form several distinct clusters, and such heterogeneity can be more appropriately modelled by a finite mixture linear mixed model. The classical estimation approach, in which both the random effects and the error parts are assumed to follow normal distribution, is sensitive to outliers, and failure to accommodate outliers may greatly jeopardize the model estimation and inference. We propose a new mixture linear mixed model using multivariate t distribution. For each mixture component, we assume the response and the random effects jointly follow a multivariate t distribution, to conveniently robustify the estimation procedure. An efficient expectation conditional maximization algorithm is developed for conducting maximum likelihood estimation. The degrees of freedom parameters of the t distributions are chosen data adaptively, for achieving flexible trade-off between estimation robustness and efficiency. ABSTRACTClustered observations such as longitudinal data are often analysed with generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). Approximate Bayesian inference for GLMMs with normally distributed random effects can be done using integrated nested Laplace approximations (INLA), which is in general known to yield accurate results. However, INLA is known to be less accurate for GLMMs with binary response. For longitudinal binary response data it is common that patients do not change their health state during the study period. In this case the grouping covariate perfectly predicts a subset of the response, which implies a monotone likelihood with diverging maximum likelihood (ML) estimates for cluster-specific parameters. This is known as quasi-complete separation. In this paper we demonstrate, based on longitudinal data from a randomized clinical trial and two simulations, that the accuracy of INLA decreases with increasing degree of cluster-specific quasi-complete separation. Comparing parameter estimates by INLA, Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling and ML shows that INLA increasingly deviates from the other methods in such a scenario. 相似文献
