In this article, we use two efficient approaches to deal with the difficulty in computing the intractable integrals when implementing Gibbs sampling in the nonlinear mixed effects model (NLMM) based on Dirichlet processes (DP). In the first approach, we compute the Laplace's approximation to the integral for its high accuracy, low cost, and ease of implementation. The second approach uses the no-gaps algorithm of MacEachern and Müller (1998 MacEachern , S. , Müller , P. ( 1998 ). Estimating mixtures of Dirichlet process models . We apply both approaches to real problems and simulations. For four variables x1,x2, x3 and x4, which have a quadrivariate normal distribution with means equal to zero, the positive ortrhant probability is the probability that all of the x.'s are simultaneously positive. A representation for the quadrivariate normal positive orthant probability is obtained and it is a function of no more than three integrals over a single variable. This article studies the hypothesis testing and interval estimation for the among-group variance component in unbalanced heteroscedastic one-fold nested design. Based on the concepts of generalized p-value and generalized confidence interval, tests and confidence intervals for the among-group variance component are developed. Furthermore, some simulation results are presented to compare the performance of the proposed approach with those of existing approaches. It is found that the proposed approach and one of the existing approaches can maintain the nominal confidence level across a wide array of scenarios, and therefore are recommended to use in practical problems. Estimation of finite mixture models when the mixing distribution support is unknown is an important problem. This article gives a new approach based on a marginal likelihood for the unknown support. Motivated by a Bayesian Dirichlet prior model, a computationally efficient stochastic approximation version of the marginal likelihood is proposed and large-sample theory is presented. By restricting the support to a finite grid, a simulated annealing method is employed to maximize the marginal likelihood and estimate the support. Real and simulated data examples show that this novel stochastic approximation and simulated annealing procedure compares favorably with existing methods.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the p-generalized polar methods for the simulation of the p-generalized Gaussian distribution. On the basis of geometric measure representations, the well-known Box–Muller method and the Marsaglia–Bray rejecting polar method for the simulation of the Gaussian distribution are generalized to simulate the p-generalized Gaussian distribution, which fits much more flexibly to data than the Gaussian distribution and has already been applied in various fields of modern sciences. To prove the correctness of the p-generalized polar methods, we give stochastic representations, and to demonstrate their adequacy, we perform a comparison of six simulation techniques w.r.t. the goodness of fit and the complexity. The competing methods include adapted general methods and another special method. Furthermore, we prove stochastic representations for all the adapted methods.  相似文献

The problem of estimating the difference between two Poisson means is considered. A new moment confidence interval (CI), and a fiducial CI for the difference between the means are proposed. The moment CI is simple to compute, and it specializes to the classical Wald CI when the sample sizes are equal. Numerical studies indicate that the moment CI offers improvement over the Wald CI when the sample sizes are different. Exact properties of the CIs based on the moment, fiducial and hybrid methods are evaluated numerically. Our numerical study indicates that the hybrid and fiducial CIs are in general comparable, and the moment CI seems to be the best when the expected total counts from both distributions are two or more. The interval estimation procedures are illustrated using two examples.  相似文献

This article examines some improperly stated but often used textbook probability problems. Moving from a probabilistic to a statistical setting provides insight into group testing (i.e., observing only whether one or more of a group responds and not the response of each individual). Exact methods are used to construct tables showing (i) that group testing n times to estimate p can be more efficient than n individual tests even for small n and large p, (ii) optimal grouping strategies for various (n, p) combinations, and (iii) the efficiencies and biases achieved.  相似文献
