The Quality of Urban Environments in the Brazilian Amazon

In the Brazilian Amazon during the 1980s,urban population growth outstripped rural growth, andby 1991, most of the region's population resided inurban areas. Much of this urban growth involvedestablishment of unplanned housing with inadequateinfrastructure, which resulted in rising pollution. This paper compares indicators of environmentalquality in urban populations of the Amazon in 1980 and1991, and among different kinds of urban populationsin 1991. The results show that environmental qualityin the region deteriorated during the 1980s as theproduction of and exposure to environmental hazardsrose while resources to ward off hazards eroded. Thefindings also show that environmental quality wasparticularly poor in more rapidly growing urbancenters. The urban Amazon may not afford an adequatestandard of living and this may generate out-migrationfrom the region.

注重素质培养,实现教育实习的目的

面对实习学校设备参差不齐,指导教师素质有高有低,实习学生来源、民族、性别比例不均的状况,我校教育实习相应地采取了城乡结合式、基地式等多种形式.在实习中,通过准备、实习、总结三个阶段,加强学生教风、教态、仪表、行为、着装、语言和板书的专门素质教育,以期达到教育实习的目的.     

Heteroscedastic Regression Models and Applications to Off-line Quality Control

We discuss in the present paper the analysis of heteroscedastic regression models and their applications to off-line quality control problems. It is well known that the method of pseudo-likelihood is usually preferred to full maximum likelihood since estimators of the parameters in the regression function obtained are more robust to misspecification of the variance function. Despite its popularity, however, existing theoretical results are difficult to apply and are of limited use in many applications. Using more recent results in estimating equations, we obtain an efficient algorithm for computing the pseudo-likelihood estimator with desirable convergence properties and also derive simple, explicit and easy to apply asymptotic results. These results are used to look in detail at variance minimization in off-line quality control, yielding techniques of inferences for the optimized design parameter. In application of some existing approaches to off-line quality control, such as the dual response methodology, rigorous statistical inference techniques are scarce and difficult to obtain. An example of off-line quality control is presented to discuss the practical aspects involved in the application of the results obtained and to address issues such as data transformation, model building and the optimization of design parameters. The analysis shows very encouraging results, and is seen to be able to unveil some important information not found in previous analyses.     

An improved graphical procedure for multivariate-quality control

In an earlier article (Kulkarni and Paranjape 1984) we proposed a procedure based on Andrews' function plot technique for the quality control of multivariate process. It was shown that this procedure may lead to an erroneous conclusions regarding the status of the process. This article presents an improved method which avoids the above drawback. A heuristic justification is provided to show that the new method is free from the error. Simulation studies are carried out to support the claim. An example is included to illustrate the use of the new technique.     

Sampling inspection for resubmitted lots

Lot resubmissions are allowed in situations where the original inspection results are suspected or when the supplier is allowed to opt for resampling as per the provisions of the contract etc. This paper examines the situation of resampling of lots and derives the performance measures of a resampling scheme having a single sampling plan for inspection. The usefulness and limitations of resampling of resubmitted lots are also discussed     

Errors in inspection and grading distributional aspects ofscreening and merarchal screening

Continuing the studies of Johnson et al (1980) and Johnson and Kotz (1981), further distributions arising from models of errors in inspection and grading of samples from finite, possibly stratified lots are obtained. Screening, and hierarchal screening forms of inspection are also considered, and the effects of errors on the advantages of these techniques assessed.     

Estimation of a process capability index for inverse gaussian distribution

In this article, interval estimates of Clements' process capability index are studied through bootstrapping when the underlying distribution is Inverse Gaussian. The standard bootstrap, the percentile bootstrap, and the bias-corrected percentile bootstrap confidence intervals are compared.
