Maximum likelihood and optimum location of observation sites in geodetic and spatial surveying

In geodetic and spatial surveying, accurate statistical es-timates of the Cartesian coordinates of a stationary target depend, in general, on such factors as target position, number and type of instruments, their location, their accuracy, and their mix. Direct measurements are assumed to be made in elevation, azimuth, and range with errors independently and normally distributed. For a mix of instruments, theoretical arguments are established using maximum likelihood estimation to determine the optimal siting of the instruments which minimizes (GDOP)² or the square of the geo-metric dilution of precision = sum of the variances of the estimates in the three orthogonal directions.     

Quantitative models for optimal rest period scheduling

Mathematical and simulation models studying work-rest schedules in a production process are developed to arrive at an optimal rest policy to maximize work output per unit time. A CSMP simulation study is used to test the sensitivity of the results for different specific cases.     

A Class of Multivariate Distributions

In this paper we introduce a class of multivariate distributions, known as the generalized Liouville distribution and defined by the functional form (0 ≤x_i < ∞, αi > 0, β_i > 0, q_i > 0). It is shown that such distributions can be used to derive both the Dirichlet distribution and the beta distribution of the second kind.
