The application of optimization techniques in digital simulation experiments is frequently complicated by the presence of large experimental error variances. Two of the more widely accepted design strategies for the resolution of this problem include the assignment of common pseudorandom number streams and the assignment of antithetic pseudorandom number streams to the experimental points. When considered separately, however, each of these variance-reduction procedures has rather restrictive limitations. This paper examines the simultaneous use of these two techniques as a variance-reduction strategy in response surface methodology (RSM) analysis of simulation models. A simulation of an inventory system is used to illustrate the application and benefits of this assignment procedure, as well as the basic components of an RSM analysis.  相似文献

The authors, as leaders in a public child welfare system, have teamed together and reached out to their private sector partners in a large, rural county in western Colorado. This effort was part of a comprehensive, communitywide effort to redesign and fundamentally improve the entire child welfare service delivery system. Across the country in many areas where collaboration and integration have been the focus, we often hear voices in the private and public sector declaring the importance of integration. Why, then, does it not happen as a general course of action? The authors believe the answer lies in leadership, both public and private. This article presents a new way of modeling time-varying volatility. We generalize the usual stochastic volatility models to encompass regime-switching properties. The unobserved state variables are governed by a first-order Markov process. Bayesian estimators are constructed by Gibbs sampling. High-, medium- and low-volatility states are identified for the Standard and Poor's 500 weekly return data. Persistence in volatility is explained by the persistence in the low- and the medium-volatility states. The high-volatility regime is able to capture the 1987 crash and overlap considerably with four U.S. economic recession periods.  相似文献

Rapid technological advances have resulted in continual changes in data acquisition and reporting processes. While such advances have benefited research in these areas, the changing technologies have, at the same time, created difficulty for statistical analysis by generating outdated data which are incompatible with data based on newer technology. Relationships between these incompatible variables are complicated; not only they are stochastic, but also often depend on other variables, rendering even a simple statistical analysis, such as estimation of a population mean, difficult in the presence of mixed data formats. Thus, technological advancement has brought forth, from the statistical perspective, a methodological problem of the analysis of newer data with outdated data. In this paper, we discuss general principles for addressing the statistical issues related to the analysis of incompatible data. The approach taken to the task at hand has three desirable properties, it is readily understood, since it builds upon a linear regression setting, it is flexible to allow for data incompatibility in either the response or covariate, and it is not computationally intensive. In addition, inferences may be made for a latent variable of interest. Our considerations to this problem are motivated by the analysis of delta wave counts, as a surrogate for sleep disorder, in the sleep laboratory of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where two major changes had occurred in the acquisition of this data, resulting in three mixed formats. By developing appropriate methods for addressing this issue, we provide statistical advancement that is compatible with technological advancement.  相似文献
