Service robotics: do you know your new companion? Framing an interdisciplinary technology assessment

Service-Robotic—mainly defined as “non-industrial robotics”—is identified as the next economical success story to be expected
after robots have been ubiquitously implemented into industrial production lines. Under the heading of service-robotic, we
found a widespread area of applications reaching from robotics in agriculture and in the public transportation system to service
robots applied in private homes. We propose for our interdisciplinary perspective of technology assessment to take the human
user/worker as common focus. In some cases, the user/worker is the effective subject acting by means of and in cooperation
with a service robot; in other cases, the user/worker might become a pure object of the respective robotic system, for example,
as a patient in a hospital. In this paper, we present a comprehensive interdisciplinary framework, which allows us to scrutinize
some of the most relevant applications of service robotics; we propose to combine technical, economical, legal, philosophical/ethical,
and psychological perspectives in order to design a thorough and comprehensive expert-based technology assessment. This allows
us to understand the potentials as well as the limits and even the threats connected with the ongoing and the planned implementation
of service robots into human lifeworld—particularly of those technical systems displaying increasing grades of autonomy. 相似文献

The proposition that environmental scarcity causes violent conflict attracts both popular and academic interest. Neomalthusian writers have developed theoretical arguments explaining this connection, and have conducted numerous case studies that seem to support the view that scarcity of biological assets such as land and other renewable resources causes conflict. So far there have been few systematic quantitative or comparative studies, and the few that exist have focused on particular forms of environmental degradation or on a small subset of resources, particularly mineral wealth. We test a more general argument about the effects of resource scarcity by examining the most widely-used measure of environmental sustainability: the ecological footprint. Contrary to neomalthusian thinking, we find that countries with a heavier footprint have a substantially greater chance of peace. Biocapacity and the ecological reserve also predict to peace, but these results are more fragile. Separate tests for smaller conflicts, for the post-Cold War period, and with additional control variables do not yield stronger support for the scarcity thesis. On the whole, the neomalthusian model of conflict receives little support from this analysis. We cannot exclude that erosion of the earth’s carrying capacity can increase conflict in the long run, but an empirical analysis with the ecological footprint measure does not provide any support for such a position. 相似文献

In this paper we solve the edge isoperimetric problem for circulant networks and consider the problem of embedding circulant networks into various graphs such as arbitrary trees, cycles, certain multicyclic graphs and ladders to yield the minimum wirelength. 相似文献

The emergent use of service robots in more and more areas of social life raises a number of legal issues which have to be addressed in order to apply and adapt the existing legal framework to this new technology. The article provides an overview of law as a means to regulate and govern technology and discusses fundamental issues of the relationship between law and technology. It then goes on to address a number of relevant problems in the field of service robotics. In particular, these issues include the organization of administrative control and the legal liability regime which applies to service robots. Also, the issue of autonomy of service robots is discussed, which cannot easily be answered under the existing, human-centered legal regime. 相似文献

Children living in out-of-home care are at greater risk of poor educational outcomes compared to other children. To address their educational needs, several programs have been developed. Within a qualitative paradigm, this study explored the experiences of students about their involvement in TEACHaR (Transforming Educational Achievement for Children at Risk), a specialized education programme. Eight students (aged 13 to 18 years) from the programme participated in individual, semi-structured interviews. Responses were analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Participants indicated that the programme provided individualized and flexible academic support, reduced their shame and embarrassment and provided them with more than academic support. They highlighted the importance of the student–educator relationship, and the need for encouragement and motivation to pursue their educational goals. Finally, findings report on how COVID-19 impacts on student experiences of the programme. Recommendations for the development and improvement of education programs for students in out-of-home care conclude this paper. 相似文献
