New deal public relations: A glimpse into FDR press secretary Stephen Early's work

Long-time confidant and press secretary to US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Stephen Early served throughout FDR's 12-year administration. As such, he was chief White House communicator during the implementation of the president's New Deal policies and throughout World War II. In March 1934, on the first day of his second year as secretary, Early started a diary. He added to it until the end of the decade. This study examines 131 of Early's diary entries over its 6 years to construct a glimpse of his professional and personal life as a high-level government communicator. Compilations of his most common activities are made and compared over time, and a discussion of Early's day-to-day professional work, private time, and contributions within the context of modern public relations practice are included.     

Use of quantitative ultrasound as bone mineral density evaluation in an Italian female population living with HIV: A real-life experience

This is a multicenter cross-sectional study where we aimed to detect the rate of osteopenia/osteoporosis in an HIV female population (WLWHIV) by means of “heel quantitative ultrasound” (QUS) measurement. We enrolled 273 patients, mean age 48.1 years, 36% menopausal, 96% on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Calcaneal measure of bone mass index by QUS revealed osteopenia and osteoporosis in 76 (27.8%) and 16 (5.9%) WLWHIV. Our data underline the correlation between low QUS parameters and traditional risk factors for osteoporosis rather than with cART exposure, thus suggesting the crucial importance of detection and correction of traditional risk factors for osteoporosis in WLWHIV.     

Frauen in der Migrationsbewegung: ihre „Spiegelfunktion” in den Sozio-ökonomischen und Kulturellen Wandlungsprozessen

Migrations have the function to act as a ?mirror“ of structural as well as subjective changes. The article focuses on this function within the processes of social transformation of our times, with a particular attention to the female component. It allows in a symbolical way to observe the passage from the fordist model of production and labour to the post-fordism, where the need of labour in the tertiary sector is growing and more flexible. Furthermore, the work of migrant women makes the ongoing transformation within the welfare states visible, crossed by strong reorganisations. Finally, female migrations are useful in reading problems and challenges connected with the multicultural question, as migrant women are often placed on the threshold of different cultural references.     

Simple plurality versus plurality runoff with privately informed voters

This paper compares two voting methods commonly used in presidential elections: simple plurality voting and plurality runoff. In a situation in which a group of voters have common interests but do not agree on which candidate to support due to private information, information aggregation requires them to split their support between their favorite candidates. However, if a group of voters split their support, they increase the probability that the winner of the election is not one of their favorite candidates. In a model with three candidates, due to this tension between information aggregation and the need for coordination, plurality runoff leads to higher expected utility for the majority than simple plurality voting if the information held by voters about the candidates is not very accurate. Inner tourism in Italy: social actors and tourist places

The tourist trend can be considered under several aspects. A widely accepted typology of the forms of tourism is the one formulated by E. Cohen, which in Italy was introduced by Asterio Savelli, proposing among the various tourism typologies a typological sequence which follows several objectives and routes depending on the different cultural realities, i.e. ethnical tourism, cultural tourism, historical (and artistic) tourism, environmental tourism and recreational tourism. Two forms seem to be dominant as ideal type, combining the characteristics of the social actor with the ones of the holiday resorts, the form of the vacationer, in the bathing, lake, hill or mountain resorts and the form of the sightseer, whose presence can be indicated as primary in the large centers of art and history and as secondary in the minor centers.     

Anonymity in large societies

In a social choice model with an infinite number of agents, there may occur “equal size” coalitions that a preference aggregation rule should treat in the same manner. We introduce an axiom of equal treatment with respect to a measure of coalition size and explore its interaction with common axioms of social choice. We show that, provided the measure space is sufficiently rich in coalitions of the same measure, the new axiom is the natural extension of the concept of anonymity, and in particular plays a similar role in the characterization of preference aggregation rules.     

A note on convergence rates for posterior distributions via large deviations techniques

This paper provides rates of convergence for a class of posterior distributions which are exchangeable with respect to a tree of partitions. The derivations rely on large deviations techniques.
