Immigration Policy and the Environment: The Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area

The following report will clarify the relationship between immigration and the environment through an analysis of both demographic and environmental data. This analysis will involve, first, an examination of the theoretical background of the population-environment debate and the conceptual models that help to illustrate this relationship. Second, general concepts of natural resource allocation will be discussed with an example from the fisheries management literature. Third, the population growth in the Washington, D.C. area will be examined, followed by the impacts of this growth on some aspects of the local and regional environment     

Behind the curtain: Julian Simon's manipulation of immigration studies

The Cato Institute-published study by Julian Simon,Immigration: The Demographic and Economic Facts (1995), is a fifty page amalgam of Simon's analysis, extracts from studies by other immigration researchers, and tables and charts that might intimidate some readers into believing that it is a work of original scholarship and represents new academic research findings on the effects of immigration. Rather it is a repackaging of arguments and selective earlier data, often out of date or meaningless because of the way that it is selected and manipulated.     

Working the truth and perfecting the moment for physicians and patients: a serious challenge for information systems

Most of us can remember the crowning sense of elegance we occasionally felt when we solved a very difficult geometry problem. We linked the proof to the postulates. It was almost like calling on history or the elders to stand silently with us in the flurry of our moment. We "worked truth." I'd like to capture a little of that same "working truth" and apply it in a very unlikely spot: information systems and information technology. It is time to go back and look at the basic postulates of knowledge and responsibility and truthfully apply them in the health care interchange between doctor and patient and make sure that our systems add to and even create an elegance so that the basic relationship of physician and patient in healing can flourish.
