This paper is about corporate planning, seen primarily but not exclusively from the viewpoint of operational research. The reasons for the rise of interest in corporate planning are examined, as are the contributions which O.R. has made or can make to corporate planning problems. An abstract discussion of these problems concentrates on those posed by increasing “connectedness” in the environment. After comparing the responses of the “commonsense manager”, the model-oriented operational researcher, and the cybernetician, the question is posed: “How can the operational researcher or planner enhance the adaptive capability of his organization?” A case study illustrates one possible form of solution, the “modular” approach; and another, the “zoom-lens” is outlined. The relevance of global system modelling to the widening problems of the corporate planner is also considered, and related to the concepts previously discussed.  相似文献

One of the requirements of the curriculum of the new BA Social Work is that students shadow the work of practitioners before they undertake supervised practice. Shadowing provides an opportunity to observe social workers in different agencies and to learn from the experience of being in the observer role. This article focuses on the observational learning which is part of the shadowing experience. It discusses an observation curriculum designed for a new student group at an early stage in the programme. Using feedback from student assessments on the Sussex/Brighton BA, the course structure and learning outcomes are described and analysed. From initial evaluations it is argued that observation in shadowing provides an important introduction to key aspects of professional learning such as anti‐oppressive practice and communication skills.  相似文献

This report provides a summary of the US demographic and population trends in the 21st century. It gives objective information on population growth, the determinants of population change, residential trends, racial and ethnic diversity, age profile, family life, households and families, measures of well-being, and future prospects. It is shown that US population is growing through relatively high fertility, migration and increasing life expectancy. Longer life expectancy has had a significant effect on American family life. Immigration fuels rapid population growth and social change creating increased ethnic diversity. Family life pattern also shifted, early marriage is replaced by cohabitation and divorce rates are increasing resulting in increased number of single-parent families. Many Americans have prospered well beyond their expectations; educational attainment vastly improved; more people moved out of poverty and more working women indicates a change in the workforce trends. Overall, it is noted that the US population will continue to grow. Prospect of such robust growth intensifies concerns about pollution and other environmental threats. At the same time, it seem that population growth is inextricably linked to the nations's prosperity.  相似文献
