Use of the regression of mean crowding on mean density for estimating sample size and the transformation of data for the analysis of variance 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Summary An approximate method for estimating the sample size in simple random sampling and a systematic way of transformation of sample
data are derived by using the parameters α and β of the regression of mean crowding on mean density in the spatial distribution
per quadrat of animal populations (Iwao, 1968). If the values of α and β have been known for the species concerned, the sample size needed to attain a desired precision
can be estimated by simply knowing the approximate level of mean density of the population to be sampled. Also, an appropriate
variance stabilizing transformation of sample data can be obtained by the method given here without restrictions on the distribution
pattern of the frequency counts.

Summary Larvae of genusPieris in the northern part of Kyoto City are parasitized by two tachinid flies:Epicampocera succincta, a specialist on genusPieris, andCompsilura concinnata, a generalist with very wide host-range. We surveyed the parasitism rates ofPieris by both flies for two years at six study areas. In these study areas, there lived three host species in the genusPieris: P. rapae, P. melete, andP. napi, but neither tachinid parasitizedP. napi to any significant extent. In the mountainous district,P. rapae andP. melete coexisted and their populations were relatively continuous, while in the lowland, onlyP. rapae larvae were abundant in spring and autumn, but even they disappeared in summer. Parasitisms byE. succincta occurred mainly in mountainous district and never in the lowland.C. concinnata parasitizedPieris in all the areas, but its parasitisms occurred mainly in autumn.
We analyzed the factors affecting the spatial and temporal patterns of parasitism rates and presumed that the temporal discontinuity
of host population restricted the distribution of the specialist parasitoid. 相似文献

Summary Difficulty arises in applying marking-and-recapture methods to insects when the probability of recapture of marked individuals
is changed with advancing age, either due to detachment of the mark by moulting (in the case of larvae) or to changes in their
survival rate or their behaviour. A modification of the re-recapture method (Leslie
et al., 1953) has been devised to analyze the capture-recapture data of the 5th-instar larvae and adults ofNezara viridula L. Estimation of the rate of moulting to the adult stage is made with the aid of additional information on larval survival.
Migration rates of the larvae between the two halves of the census field is estimated byIwao's (1963) method. Through these analyses, the dynamic feature of the population during transition from the 5th instar to, adult
is revealed. Several problems involved in the application of marking-and-recapture methods to insect populations are discussed.

Intra- and interspecific larval interactions that take place in a host body were investigated for two tachnid fliesEpicampocera succincta andCompsilura concinnata (Diptera: Tachinidae) parasitizingPieris butterfly larvae.E. succincta, a specialist onPieris butterflies, showed contest-type intraspecific competition, eliminating all the other conspecific larvae. On the other hand,
an extreme generalist parasitoidC. concinnata exhibited scramble-type competition, sharing the host with other conspecifics and suffering reduced body size as a result.
However, when these two species occurred together in a single host,C. concinnata had a much higher chance of survival. Moreover,C. concinnata could often survive in the presence of a parasitoid waspCotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) whileE. succincta could not. The high tolerance ofC. concinnata could be attributable to its being an extreme generalist: To attack and survive on many different hosts, one has to be able
to deal with various competitors. The competitive inferiority of the specialistE. succincta, on the other hand, may be a result of relatively recent encounter with, those competitors. 相似文献

In Japan, environmental standards for contaminants in groundwater and in leachate from soil are set with the assumption that they are used for drinking water over a human lifetime. Where there is neither a well nor groundwater used for drinking, the standard is thus too severe. Therefore, remediation based on these standards incurs excessive effort and cost. In contrast, the environmental-assessment procedure used in the United States and the Netherlands considers the site conditions (land use, existing wells, etc.); however, a risk assessment is required for each site. Therefore, this study proposes a new framework for judging contamination in Japan by considering the merits of the environmental standards used and a method for risk assessment. The framework involves setting risk-based concentrations that are attainable remediation goals for contaminants in soil and groundwater. The framework was then applied to a model contaminated site for risk management, and the results are discussed regarding the effectiveness and applicability of the new methodology. 相似文献

Summary A method for estimating the rate of population interchange between two areas is described in this paper. It is applicable
to the case where the sampling ratios and the survival factors of the populations on two areas are different from each other.
From the marking-and-recapture data taken at three successive occasions, we can obtain the estimates of emigration factors,
total survival factors over two areas and the ratio of surviving migrants to the total survivors over the two areas, for each
of two populations initially living on different areas.

A new method of sequential sampling to classify populations relative to a critical density 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Syuniti Iwao 《Researches on Population Ecology》1975,16(2):281-288
Summary A method of sequential sampling for grading population level in relation to a critical density is proposed. The method is
based on the
relationship and can be used without restrictions on the distribution patterns. The formulae for simple random sampling as
well as for two-stage sampling are given.
