Infant mortality by Father’s occupation from the 1911 Census of England and Wales

Infant mortality in England and Wales only began its secular decline at the beginning of this century, although mortality among those aged 1-4 began to decline earlier. The 1911 Census of Fertility provides the basis for estimates of infant mortality among occupational groups. A diagrammatic model of decline is elaborated, using fertility decline, social class, income, and urban/rural distribution as explanatory variables. Results of the analysis suggest that infant mortality decline, whose average value was 35 percent from a peak of 132 per 1,000, was increased by improvements in the urban environment and advanced by high or regular income, whereas fertility decline had only a small effect.     

DETECTING NATURAL SELECTION: THE STEPWISE MUTATION MODEL WITH HETEROSIS

The problem of testing whether heterozygotes have a selective advantage is considered, assuming the stepwise mutation model for electrophoretic alleles. The population is observed for a number of generations, and the likelihoods of the changes in allele frequencies under the heterozygote advantage model and under the strict neutrality model are compared. It is shown by simulation that statistical tests based on the likelihoods have little power to detect selection if only a few generations of data are available.
Many population genetic models, including the stepwise mutation model, have been formulated as diffusion processes in continuous time. The paper gives expressions for the likelihoods of multivariate diffusions observed over a time interval.     

SOME STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF USE IN ANALYSING BIRD COUNT DATA1

The following report arose from an enquiry by a zoologist, J. M. Cullen, concerning various possible ways of analysing bird count data. He was particularly interested in two questions: (i) What is the best way to estimate abundances of various species?, and (ii) What evidence is there that birds occur randomly (in particular, as a Poisson process) as opposed to in flocks or according to some mutual repulsion process?

A MADM justification of a budget reduction decision

In 1988, a significant budget reduction at the University of Wyoming left the Athletic Department nearly $700,000 short on operating funds compared to the previous biennium. In order to make the necessary monetary cuts, the Athletic Department eliminated the men's and women's varsity ski teams from University sponsorship, thus removing one of the most successful and popular programs from the athletic family. A protest of this action quickly spread throughout the state and the Athletic Department received harsh criticism. However, through the cardinal preference techniques of Multiple Attribute Decision Making, it was determined that the criticism of the Athletic Department for dropping the ski programs was unfounded. But in light of the politics of the situation, after several months of deliberation, the ski programs were eventually reinstated with a greatly reduced budget and the team committed to raise a certain percentage of their monetary requirements through their own fund raising efforts.

The sampling theory of Fisher's logarithmic distribution, discussed in Wani (1978), is extended to the class of power-series distributions.     

Prevention of Elder Mistreatment in Nursing Homes: Competencies for Direct-Care Staff

Existing training on elder mistreatment in nursing homes focuses on detection and reporting of abuse, with little training specifically targeted toward prevention of mistreatment before it occurs. We used qualitative interviews with nursing home staff, policy makers, and related professionals to identify training needs. Based on participant accounts, we drafted a number of competencies essential for caregiver training to prevent mistreatment in nursing homes. Competencies include those dealing with definitions and policies, risks for mistreatment, communication and respect in relationships with residents, and development of a cooperative work environment. Competencies are discussed along with illustrative examples, and implications for practice and policy are addressed.
