Equity Challenges for the Early Childhood Curriculum

Curriculum documents from the USA, UK and Australia show remarkable harmony on the need for a developmentally-based curriculum in producing quality early childhood programmes. This paper uses a detailed discussion of a grass roots level research project in Australia to explore the contention that a curriculum built solely on these principles and the practices that develop from them is likely to be sexist. Several aspects of the curriculum that need rethinking in relation to gender equity goals are identified.     

Gay youth and gay adults: bridging the generation gap

Recent discussion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) youth has included two emphases: the burgeoning trend toward youth-supportive organizations and focus on risk factors experienced by these youth. In practice, the two are intertwined: the need for youth-supportive endeavors is typically demonstrated by appeals to the risks LGBT youth face. Relatively little attention has been given to relationships between youth and adults in LGBT communities. This article employs data from a long-term qualitative study with LGBT youth, supported by information from numerous other settings to suggest that a failure on the part of both groups fully to comprehend the experience of the other hampers the optimal functioning of everyone involved. In particular, we suggest that the discourse about the dangers faced by LGBT youth, despite its being thoroughly well-intentioned. may actually place these teens at greater risk.     

What's wrong is right: A response to the state of the discipline

In the June issue ofSociological Forum, several authors addressed the question, What's Wrong with Sociology. Answers included increased fragmentation of the discipline, and the lack of an identifiable cumulative core of sociological knowledge. This paper examines many of the claims made by the contributors to the June 1994Sociological Forum, reframes their arguments, and by placing debates regarding the problems in sociology in a broader perspective, identifies many of the recent advances made by the discipline. Focusing on such notable contributions to the field as feminist and postmodern scholarship, we locate the positive side of multiple perspective research.Feminist Scholars in Sociology is a collective of researchers and teachers at the University of Colorado interested in exploring and sharing feminist theory and methodology.     

2008 North American Serials Interest Group Conference: Taking the Sting out of Serials!

Abstract

The twelfth annual MOBIUS Conference was held June 7–9, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri. The MOBIUS consortium of Missouri is currently composed of fifty-nine academic libraries, two public libraries, and the Missouri State Library. The conference offered various opportunities, including a keynote address by Meredith Farkas and a networking dessert session on the first night. The second day featured six concurrent sessions, each having six different presentations, along with delicious food, generous door prizes, and the chance to meet with vendors. The third day consisted of four different four-hour post-conference training sessions. Presentations are available for download from the conference Web site.¹     

Temporal Orientation in Hearing Impaired People

This paper reviews various aspects of the temporal dimension. Cultural perspectives, audition and language development are suggested as factors that may be involved in the development and expression of the human concept of time. The author argues that deafness may impact sufficiently on one or more of these factors to affect the development of temporal orientation in deaf people. The implications of this for the deaf population are discussed. Tentative hypotheses are made and a number of avenues of research that might enlighten our understanding in this area are proposed.     

Recent Representations in Popular Environmental Discourse: Individualism,Wastefulness and the Global Economy*

À partir du concept de règie morale, on proc?ede à une déconstruction critique du récent discours environnemental axé sur l'individualisme et la gestion des déchets. Les sources analysées comprennent des emissions télévisées diffusées à la CBC telles que The Journal, Prime Time News et The Nature of Things ainsi que les programmes sco‐laires de l'Ontario. On soutient que, dans la compréhension populaire à l'égard de l'environnement, l'accent mis sur l'irres‐ponsabilite indi‐viduelle a été, de bien des façons, liéà des impératifs économiques, aux connaissances déterministes entourant l'économie mondiale ainsi qu'à la rationalité néolibérale. Par conséquent, de telles constructions contribueraient a créer un climat culturel, oú l'émergence d'un discours public critique remettant en cause les « réalités économiques » deviendrait moins probable. Making use of the concept of moral regulation, a critical deconstruction of the recent environmental discourse of individualism and waste is undertaken. Sources analysed include CBC's The Journal, Prime Time News and The Nature of Things, and Ontario curriculum guides. It is argued that the emergence in popular environmental understandings of a focus on individual irresponsibility was, in many ways, bound up with economic imperatives, deterministic understandings surrounding the global economy, and neoliberal rationality. As a result, such constructions are suggested to participate in a cultural climate where the emergence of critical public discourse that challenges “economic realities” becomes less likely.

Operationalizing Intersectionality: an Approach to Uncovering the Complexity of the Migrant Job Search in Australia

This paper explores the complexities surrounding the lived experiences of skilled migrant women and men from non‐English speaking backgrounds (NESBs) who arrive in Australia and attempt to seek work. The paper will analyze the migrants' experiences using intersectionality theory as a framework. Drawing on Anthias's social relations framework, this research will contribute to the field by demonstrating how intersectionality theory can be operationalized to understand the complex lived experiences of disadvantaged groups. The research will reveal how being a new migrant in Australia, unfamiliar with local job search processes, complicates jobseeking. The paper will show how gender and family roles impact this process, especially when young families are involved. Both genders suffer downward occupational mobility, with men seeking any type of work to get by, and women gravitating towards insecure forms of employment, or exiting the labour force, in order to manage the family unit.
