Abstract. This article presents a framework for comparing bivariate distributions according to their degree of regression dependence. We introduce the general concept of a regression dependence order (RDO). In addition, we define a new non‐parametric measure of regression dependence and study its properties. Besides being monotone in the new RDOs, the measure takes on its extreme values precisely at independence and almost sure functional dependence, respectively. A consistent non‐parametric estimator of the new measure is constructed and its asymptotic properties are investigated. Finally, the finite sample properties of the estimate are studied by means of a small simulation study. 相似文献

The social sciences offer two distinct approaches to understanding society. One originated with the Scottish moral philosophers and shaped the discipline of economics. The other emerged from the French enlightenment and influenced the study of sociology. The two approaches are based on radically different perceptions of man and man's relation to society. This paper explores these alternative hypotheses and examines some major implications. It concludes that the hypothesis reaching back to the Scottish philosophers provides the basis for a unified approach in the social sciences. 相似文献

Many economists and social scientists have conjectured that individual gifts to charity may be interdependent. This paper explores empirically how an individual's charitable contributions may be affected by the giving of others in a "reference group" of similar individuals. We find modest evidence of interdependence of preferences through these reference groups, although the aggregate effects are not large. Hence, we conclude that the inferences from standard models, which ignore interdependence of preferences, are not likely to be misleading. ( JEL H31, H41, D12) 相似文献

Abstract This article explores and engages with debates concerning the relation between internal and external ‘Development’ amongst nations. Types, trajectories, and patterns of economic growth and social structuring are investigated. Centering modes of trading and fiscal linkage and flow, the author concludes that ‘a perspective from Europe’, rather than a narrower ‘British’ view, has wider implications for the rest of the world. 相似文献

Correspondence to Karl Atkin, Social Policy Research Unit, University of York, Heslington, York YO1 5DD. Summary The multi-racial nature of British society can no longer beignored by those responsible for planning and implementing socialcare policy, particularly since community care is presentlyat a crossroads. Informal care provides a useful starting pointfrom which to introduce the notion of race into social caredebates. The paper, by reviewing a mix of empirical studiesand policy debates emerging from the literature on informalcare and black communities, examines the experience of informalcare within black communities. By discussing topics such asthe demography of care, the nature of informal care, and serviceprovision to black carers, it gives coherence to a fragmentedliterature and illustrates gaps in present understanding. 相似文献
