Either you need these women or you do not: Informing the debate on military service and citizenship

The debates on the integration of women into our armed forces have continued for over fifty years. These debates remain largely uninformed by historical evidence. Historicizing the debate on women and the American military since 1940 should not only inform discussions on the conditions for women's participation, but should also inform those about other marginalized groups. To bring rhetoric in line with reality, foster constructive change and design appropriate policy, these debates must move away from arguing the inclusion of specific groups on specific terms to the fundamental issues of citizenship and military obligation in a democratic society. This discussion must eventually include an analysis of the changing nature of international relations and conflict. where she teaches courses on Military History and Strategy. On active duty since 1980 and a qualified Signals Intelligence Officer and Space Operations Officer, she has served as a branch and division chief at Electronic Security Command Headquarters and Air Intelligence Agency Headquarters and in Japan as a Satellite Systems Flight Commander. Her military awards include four Air Force Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Services Commendation Medal, two Air Force Commendation Medals, the National Defense Medal, and an expert marksman ribbon.     

Impact of Combat on the Mental Health and Well‐Being of Soldiers and Marines

This presentation introduces a summary of leading edge research and recommendations for a number of changes regarding mental health needs and services for Veterans. Those Veterans who experienced combat exposure and those who have perceived their leadership negatively have greater risks for developing subsequent PTSD. Research data provide support for the use of Battlemind Training as a useful approach to prevent mental health issues at all phases of the deployment cycle. The author also challenges the current use of DSM–IVTR diagnoses with combat Veterans.     

Correlates of gay and lesbian couples' relationship satisfaction and relationship dissolution

A sample of committed gay and lesbian cohabiting couples engaged in two conversations after being apart for at least 8 hours: (a) an events of the day conversation and (b) a conflict resolution conversation. Physiological data were collected during the conversations and a videotape record was made. Couples viewed the videotapes and rated their affect during the interaction. The video records were coded with a system that categorized specific affects displayed. Models derived from physiology, from the perception of interaction, and from specific affective behavior were related to relationship satisfaction, and to the prediction of relationship dissolution over a 12-year period. Results supported previous findings that satisfaction and stability in gay and lesbian relationships are related to similar emotional qualities as in heterosexual relationships.     

The maximum cardinality cut problem in co-bipartite chain graphs

A co-bipartite chain graph is a co-bipartite graph in which the neighborhoods of the vertices in each clique can be linearly ordered with respect to inclusion. It is known that the maximum cardinality cut problem (\({\textsc {MaxCut}}\)) is \({\textsc {NP}}{\text {-hard}}\) in co-bipartite graphs (Bodlaender and Jansen, Nordic J Comput 7(2000):14–31, 2000). We consider \({\textsc {MaxCut}}\) in co-bipartite chain graphs. We first consider the twin-free case and present an explicit solution. We then show that \({\textsc {MaxCut}}\) is polynomial time solvable in this graph class.     

If Love Then Justice

Love belongs to the personal realm, while justice belongs to the public. Love originated evolutionarily in the subjective parent-child relationship. Justice originated in the objective perception of our social relationships. Both concepts have deep roots in our feelings. Although justice and love are interdependent, love is a prerequisite to justice. Most of those who love would behave justly to their loved ones, but not vice versa. Laws and norms try unsuccessfully to enhance love among us. However, they would hardly attain justice. With love we do not need laws or armies. Justice would necessarily prevail, and much more. Intuitively and psychologically, love is more basic than justice for our existence. Research shows that in our pursuit of happiness, love plays a central role, while justice does not. For many, love is also a goal of our existence.
