How volunteerism inhibits mobilization: a case study of shelter animal advocates

This paper presents an analysis of how volunteerism can neutralize impulses for mobilization. An ethnographic case study of shelter animal advocates, or individuals promoting shelter reform to ensure that companion animals impounded at animal shelters receive proper medical and behavioral care and are given opportunity for adoption, illuminates a specific set of mechanisms that explain why they have not engaged in collective action such as protest. The findings speak to the complex debate about the relationship between volunteerism, political engagement, and social change by identifying five processes that undercut shelter animal advocates’ capacity to act collectively in protest of how the shelter is run: (1) periods of grievance interruption; (2) exposure to the target’s institutional narratives; (3) relational ties to the target; (4) conflict avoidance; and (5) maintenance of identity as volunteers.     

A Sample Size Formula for a Non-Central t Test

An elementary method of proof of the mode, median, and mean inequality is given for skewed, unimodal distributions of continuous random variables. A proof of the inequality for the gamma, F, and beta random variables is sketched.     

Normal theory sample size formulas for some nonnormal distributions

Sample size procedures of T- and F-tests for some nonnormal distributions are discussed. An adaptation to the Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests is mentioned.     

The Use of Noncentral F Approximations for Calculation of Power and Sample Size

Approximations to the noncentral F distribution yield surprisingly accurate results for power and sample size problems arising from linear hypotheses about normal random variables. The approximations are easy to use with a desk (or hand-held) calculator that computes cumulative F probabilities. These approximations are particularly advantageous for testing the hypothesis that differences among the means are small against the alternative that the differences are large.     

Sample Size Formulas for Normal Theory T Tests

Formulas that yield minimum sample size for standard T tests are presented. Although the results are approximations, they usually yield the exact solution. Involving only standard normal quantiles, they could be used in an elementary course.     

Volunteers' Power and Resistance in the Struggle for Shelter Animal Survival

This article presents an analysis of how volunteers use different forms of capital to resist the practices and discourses of the organization for which they volunteer. Volunteers at a large public animal shelter do not share the shelter's institutionally held belief that shelter death is an inevitable result of homelessness among companion animals; to reduce shelter death, they craft challenges to the shelter practice of putting dogs down and work to construct shelter death as an avoidable and problematic outcome. Their repertoire of resistance includes educational, health‐based, relational, moral, reputational, and legal strategies. The findings illuminate that volunteers’ social location outside of the shelter provides them with capital to engage in resistance within the shelter.     

A comparison of early retirement pensions in the United States and Russia: the pensions of musicians

Early retirement pensions for particular occupations free national policy to establish the social security early retirement age at a later age that is more appropriate for the population as a whole. This paper focuses on early retirement pensions in the United States and the Russian Federation. While comparing early retirement pensions generally, the paper provides a more detailed discussion of the pensions for musicians. While this is an unconventional group to choose for the study of pensions, study of their pensions yields insights into the principles underlying retirement age policy in the two countries.
