STOCHASTIC INFLATION AND THE OPTIMAL POLICY OF PRICE ADJUSTMENT   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper analyzes the optimal policy of price adjustment for a monopolistic firm in the presence of stochastic inflation. It shows that an increase in the expected rate of inflation or in the cost of price adjustment leads to an increase in the initial real price and a decrease in the terminal real price in each period with a fixed nominal price. It also shows that the effects of increased riskiness of inflation are ambiguous.  相似文献

This article examines how the aggregate production varies with inflation when there are fixed price– and quantity–adjustment costs. It shows that such variation is determined by the elasticity of the firms’ marginal real revenue with respect to demand. The aggregate production decreases with inflation if this elasticity always exceeds minus unity, whereas the aggregate production increases with inflation if the elasticity is always less than minus unity. The aggregate production is independent of inflation in the special case that the elasticity always equals minus unity. The latter occurs if demand is derived from a log‐quadratic utility function. Abstract.  We derive the asymptotic distribution of the integrated square error of a deconvolution kernel density estimator in supersmooth deconvolution problems. Surprisingly, in contrast to direct density estimation as well as ordinary smooth deconvolution density estimation, the asymptotic distribution is no longer a normal distribution but is given by a normalized chi-squared distribution with 2 d.f. A simulation study shows that the speed of convergence to the asymptotic law is reasonably fast.  相似文献

This paper studies the consequences of costly price adjustments for the variability of real prices accompanying inflation. For constant-elasticity demand and cost of production it is shown that a higher demand, a lower cost of production, or a lower cost of price adjustment leads to less intertemporal variability of real prices. If the marginal cost of production does not increase "too" fast, then the average real price is less than the real price that would prevail in the absence of inflation; additionally, a higher demand, a lower cost of production, or a lower cost of price adjustment leads to a higher level of real prices.  相似文献

WAGE SECRECY AS A SOCIAL CONVENTION   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Despite the general belie that a free flow of information enhances efficiency, social convention appears to call for secrecy regarding individuals' wages. This paper provides an explanation for this convention. We suggest that the role of wage secrecy is to reduce effective labor mobility, and thereby enhance the feasibility of risk-shifting contracts. Wage secrecy may yield a mix of mobility and risk shifting that is superior both to a spot market for labor and to a social convention that binds workers to their employers.  相似文献
