Women's provisioning work: counting the cost for women living on low income

This paper reports on a research project that uses the concept of provisioning as a starting place in understanding the activities women in marginalized communities undertake to provide for themselves and members of their households and neighborhoods. This project explores the household and collective provisioning undertaken by women who are all part of formal community organizations in Canada. The work women do is explored from the dimension of women's relationships of responsibility. This vantage point uncovers a complex web of activity including paid employment, voluntary work, care work, exchanges of goods and services, community work, and self-provisioning. In addition, the provisioning strategies that women use when public resources are scarce are explored. In the face of significant cutbacks in public provision of goods and services, women are engaging in a complex network of activities in order to compensate through private provisioning for resources that are no longer available through public provisioning. The policy context in which these strategies are pursued is explored as well as the way in which risky policies produce risky coping strategies.     

“God Just Brought Me Through It”: Spiritual Coping Strategies for Resilience Among Intimate Partner Violence Survivors

This study highlights the spiritual coping processes for surviving and healing used by Christian women in a conservative faith community who experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Using data from 42 in-depth qualitative interviews of survivors of IPV, the findings reveal a pattern of spiritually-based survival and resilience strategies women used while coping with and eventually escaping their traumatic lives. The analysis notes the central role of spirituality as a means women used to move from coping for survival to resilient self-efficacy and healing. These findings assist clinical social workers with identifying and accessing spiritual strengths as a springboard to wellbeing.     

The provisioning responsibilities of older women

Conceptual frameworks that theorize relationship based work, caring and provisioning, are considered. It is argued that provisioning has greater potential for revealing the various dimensions of older women's contributions to society and citizenship claims. Data on the work and responsibilities of older women are presented. Participants belong to a group promoting public discussion on issues of security and justice for older women. This group was one of six research sites documenting the provisioning work done by women in diverse social locations. Findings reveal that older women carry large and complex provisioning responsibilities. This work is summarized under two categories: provisioning activities and provisioning strategies. Discussion of the findings focuses on three major issues facing older women: the unexpected magnitude of provisioning work they are doing; how to integrate the realities of an aging body into provisioning expectations; setting priorities when time is a scarce resource. Implications for theory and the citizenship claims of older women are considered.
