The effects of density and urban residence on voter turnout

The rate of voting in cities of the U.S. tends to be lower than one would expect when compared to nationwide voter participation rates. The hypothesis in question here is whether high population density and urbanness have a dampening effect on the likelihood of voting by persons living under such conditions. This question is examined by relating county voting rates in recent U.S. Presidential elections to various types of county population density, while controlling for fifteen potentially contaminating variables. The hypothesis that population density reduces voter turnout cannot be rejected on the basis of the test. There is a small but significant negative relationship between the press of population — represented by the population per square mile and urbanness — and voter turnout, even when the various control variables are present. More immediate types of density, such as housing unit and room density, appear to be insignificant. Possible reasons for the results are discussed.

A class of statistics based on the information concept

The methodic use of Shannon's entropy as a basic concept, complementing probability, leads to a new class of statistics which provides, inter alia, a measure of mutual dissimilarity y between several frequency distributions. Application to contin-gency tables with any number of dimensions yields a dimension-less, standardised contingency coefficient which depends on the direction of inference and will combine multiplicatively with the number of observed events. This class of statistics further in-cludes a continuous modification W of the number of degrees of freedom in a table, and a measure Q of its overall information content. Numerical illustrations and comparisons with former re-sults are worked out. Direct applications include the optimal partition of a quasicontinuum into cells by maximizing Q, the ordering of unordered tables by minimising local values of y, and a tentative absolute weighting of inductive inference based on the minimal necessary shift, required by an hypothesis, between the actually observed data and a set of assumed future events.     

Effects of 12 weeks of Nordic Walking and XCO Walking training on the endurance capacity of older adults

Background

Several studies have already examined the positive effects of various forms of endurance training in patient groups and in healthy adults up to 60 years old. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of Nordic Walking (NW) and XCO Walking (XCO) training on endurance capacity in healthy older adults, aged 60 years and older.

Methods

Twenty-three older participants (mean age: 69.9 ± 5.4 years) were randomly assigned to either the NW group or the XCO group. All participants were measured before and after the 12 weeks of endurance training (2 sessions/week) to examine oxygen uptake (VO₂) and energy consumption during an outdoor field test. In addition, heart rates were recorded and lactate samples were collected.

Results

NW mainly demonstrated some significant (p < 0.05) decreases in heart rate, lactate concentration at lower to moderate walking speeds, whereas XCO Walking revealed significant (p < 0.05) decreases in lactate concentration and VO₂ at low to higher walking speeds.

Conclusions

NW as well as XCO training increase the efficiency of the cardio-vascular system in older subjects. Both training approaches are suitable options for endurance training, which may serve to counteract age- and inactivity-related decreases in cardio-vascular functioning as well as aid in maintaining overall performance in older adults.

     

Should You Buy Your Customer's Values? On the Transfer of Moral Values in Industrial Purchasing

This article discusses a transfer of moral values between purchasing and supplying organisation in the manufacturing sector. In the first part, the relevant literature is discussed to glean criteria, which could facilitate such a transfer. Given a scarcity of research into ethics in purchasing, the literature review is extended into related fields, such as total quality management, environmental purchasing in retailing and minority vendor programmes in the U.S. In the second part, the question is raised whether such a transfer can at all lay claim to being of moral value. The process is screened against established ethical theories, which are found to support it. Finally, the financial impact of such a policy on the supplier is considered.
