‘Equally at home on Beacon Hill and Hill 16’? Transnational identities among Irish‐born return migrants from the United States

In this article, I examine the transnational identities that return migrants create upon resettlement in their country of origin. Specifically, I draw on interviews with Republic of Ireland‐born return migrants from the United States between the years 1996 and 2006. The analysis shows that return migrants – like other migrant groups – maintain and establish translocal identities and practices that straddle ‘here’ (Ireland) and ‘there’ (United States) upon return. However, the article goes further, asking why returnees develop such border‐spanning social fields. Some recent scholarship suggests that some migrants develop transnational identities as an adaptive response to a hostile receiving society. The analysis here shows a similar process at play for certain return migrants in the post‐return environment. Doubtless, for some returnees, a transnational identity is a natural outgrowth of having spent several years in the United States. Yet for others, one can better explain this transnational identity as a coping strategy to buffer resettlement anxieties and disappointments.     

SOLVENCY REGULATION AND THE PROPERTY-LIABILITY "INSURANCE CYCLE"

Fluctuations in the supply of property-liability insurance may be exacerbated by regulation. To limit insolvencies, regulators constrain insurers against writing an excessive quantity of insurance relative to net worth. Revenue is used as a measure of aggregate quantity. In a competitive market with inelastic demand, a constraint on the ratio of revenue to net worth yields a catastrophe process for price dynamics. Indirect evidence supports the argument that the current form of solvency regulation is destabilizing.     

The Continuity and Discontinuity of the Embodied Self in Infertility*

Ils soutiennent que les défauts du corps aboutissent à un moi intrinseque discontinu, au fur et à mesure que l'infertilité fait voler en éclats les perceptions antérieures du moi intrinsèque et remet en question les anciennes conceptualisations des individus du lien tenu pour acquis entre le corps et le moi.
Using data from in-depth interviews with 110 women and 68 men, this paper examines the construction and negotiation of the embodied self in infertility. We analyse how the men and women we interviewed construct the body as machine, negotiate loss of control, and experience the perceived failings of the embodied self within the context of dominant discourses of femininity and masculinity. We argue that the failings of the body culminate in a discontinuous embodied self as infertility shatters previously held perceptions of the embodied self and challenges individuals' former conceptualizations of the taken-for-granted link between the body and the self.     

A CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION OF A FINANCIAL PLANNING MODEL FOR COMMERCIAL BANKS

This paper describes a conceptually sound and powerful model to aid bank managers in short and long range decision making for the management of the financial performance of the bank. The planning model is a key element in an integrated computer-based planning system which includes a forecast of economic, monetary, and loan market conditions, an analysis of internal relationships, and a system of reports which provide management with access to historical data and planning summaries. The planning model at the heart of the system, contains an imbedded linear programming algorithm to optimize “balance sheet management” decisions within liquidity and capital adequacy constraints. The model recognizes the interaction between assets and liabilities, it recognizes the time value of money, and it accommodates the difference between the net marginal yield for decision making, and the gross average yield used for determining revenue. Finally, the model recognizes the crucial role of liquidity with an important treatment of gross cash flows from normal asset turnover as a major source of liquidity, and the liquidity aspects of liabilities, as well as the more traditional concept of asset marketability.     

Sample Bias Resulting from a Requirement for Written Parental Consent

The parents of an eligible sample of 1618 students in gradesfour through twelve were contacted to obtain written permissionfor their children to complete questionnaires related to alcoholand drugs. The distributions of students across the parentalresponse categories (consent-denied, no-reply, or consent-granted)were compared on the student variables of sex, grade level,ethnic group, and reading and vocabulary test scores. The explicitconsent procedure produced a sample that was approximately halfthe size of the eligible population and overrepresented whitestudents while underrepresenting blacks and Asian Americans.There was no evidence of sample bias with respect to studentgender, and the evidence regarding bias on academically relatedmeasures was mixed.
