Ethnic and kinship ties have long been viewed as potential catalysts for favoritism, and hence corruption. In experiments conducted in three countries, we recruit siblings, coethnics and strangers and vary the relationship(s) between the players of a game to observe how kin and ethnic ties influence the willingness of two players to benefit one another at the expense of a third party. We see universal sibling favoritism, but ethnic favoritism, and favoritism toward other in-group members (friends) varies. We argue this may be driven in part by kinship institutions, since favoritism is more common in societies with denser kin networks. ( JEL D9, C9, D73, J12)  相似文献

Many if not most lifetime distributions are motivated only by mathematical interest. Here, a new three-parameter distribution motivated mainly by lifetime issues is introduced. Some properties of the new distribution including estimation procedures are derived. Three real-data applications are described to show superior performance versus at least five of the known lifetime models.  相似文献

We introduce a new family of distributions based on a one-parameter distribution exhibiting bathtub-shaped hazard rates. This article investigates some properties of the mean residual life function of (nk+1)-out-of-n systems, when the lifetimes of the system components are independent random variables but not necessarily identically distributed and when the joint distribution of the component lifetimes is exchangeable, extending the results of Asadi and Goliforushani (2008) [On the mean residual life function of coherent systems. IEEE Transactions on Reliability 57 (4) 574-580] for the case of independent and identically distributed components. This paper examines the relationships between the mean residual life functions of parallel and k-out-of-n systems with the regression of order statistics. Using these relationships, the results and properties about the mean residual life function of those systems can be used for the regression of order statistics and vice versa. Finally, the paper proposes a definition for the mean residual life function of a k-out-of-n system when the number of failed components of the system is known.  相似文献
