Previous research has suggested that high levels of burnout lead to impaired functioning on the job. However, as this research has usually relied on self-reported performance, it is imperative to examine whether this association is also confirmed when using “objective” performance data (e.g., supervisor reports). This study reviewed previous research on the associations between burnout (exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) and various types of objective performance. A systematic literature search identified 16 studies dealing with the burnout-performance relationship. These studies showed the wide variety of approaches that are used to study burnout and objective performance. Using data from these 16 studies, a meta-analysis was conducted to obtain mean correlations. The meta-analytical correlations between exhaustion and in-role behaviour (based on five studies), organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB; five studies), and customer satisfaction (two studies) were -.22, -.19, and -.55, respectively, underlining the practical relevance of burnout research for organizational performance. The evidence for the relationships between depersonalization, personal accomplishment, and performance was inconclusive. Future research should focus on valid indicators of job performance, should more often employ longitudinal designs and large samples, and should consider the theoretical basis for the study expectations more extensively.  相似文献

This research presents the results of two related studies on the convergent and construct validity of three measures of reciprocity in exchange relationships at work. In Study 1, 71 Dutch teachers were interviewed about their specific investments and outcomes in the exchange relationships with their students, colleagues and school. ANOVA revealed that they reported significantly more investments than outcomes, and that the number of reported investments and outcomes mentioned varied as a function of the type of exchange relationship. Building on these results, multi-item scales were created to assess reciprocity at a detailed level for each of the three exchange relationships. Study 2 validated these specific reciprocity measures by relating them to two global assessments of reciprocity (convergent validity) as well as to measures of job stress and well-being (construct validity). LISREL-analysis of data obtained from a further sample of 224 teachers revealed that for each type of exchange relationship there were significant, consistent and meaningful relationships among the three reciprocity measures. Further, hierarchical regression analysis showed that the reciprocity measures were differentially related to job stressors and measures of well-being. Implications are discussed.  相似文献

This study examined the antecedents of job strain (emotional exhaustion, health complaints) and withdrawal behaviour (e.g. lowered organizational commitment) among a cross-sectional sample of 131 academic staff members of the law department of a large Dutch university. Conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989) provided the theoretical background for this study. Strains and withdrawal behaviours were expected to be most prominent among those who reported having few resources and/or who reported high job demands. Structural equation modelling revealed that this was indeed the case. As predicted, differential patterns of effects emerged for job demands and job resources. Analysis of the effects of four job-specific stressors revealed that especially the structural aspects of a staff member's teaching task (e.g. the number of students in their classes) contributed strongly to perceived job demands. Theoretical and practical implications of the study are discussed.  相似文献

Arising from interest concerning the possibility of causal relationships among the three components of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, several process models have been proposed for the development of burnout. The present paper first reviews the evidence in favour of the three most influential of these (Leiter and Maslach's model (1988); Golembiewski, Boudreau, Munzenrider, & Luo's (1996) phase model; and Lee and Ashforth's model (1993)). These three models, and our own model (which integrates of two of them, and includes feedback effects of depersonalization on emotional exhaustion) are then compared with each other using structural equation modelling, drawing on longitudinal data from two Dutch samples (total N=1185). The review revealed that none of the seven previous studies on this issue provided any convincing support for any particular causal order proposed so far. In contrast, our own study showed that high levels of exhaustion were associated with high levels of depersonalization over time across both samples. Further, higher levels of depersonalization led to higher levels of emotional exhaustion and lower levels of personal accomplishment. To our knowledge, the present research is the first to provide reliable longitudinal evidence for the conceptualization of burnout as a developmental process, although the effects are not large enough to be of practical use in the recognition of burnout.  相似文献

The global spread of English is an inextricable part of the globalization of culture and media. Despite this close entanglement, theories on the global spread of English have largely been developed within separate fields, such as applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, with relatively limited reference to theories of cultural or media globalization. Conversely, scholars of cultural and media globalization who focus on the role of language rarely refer to work on the global spread of English. Despite this mutual independence, paradigms of cultural and media globalization on the one hand, and of the globalization of English on the other, have developed along remarkably similar lines. The aim of this paper is to identify and explain these similarities. After discussing five major paradigms in cultural and media globalization and their equivalents in theory on the global spread of English, we will argue for a transdisciplinary approach to the study of the globalization of culture, media, and language.

La propagación global del inglés es una parte inextricable de la globalización de la cultura y los medios. A pesar de este enredo, las teorías sobre la propagación global del inglés se han desarrollado ampliamente dentro de campos separados, tales como la lingüística y la sociolingüística, con una referencia relativamente limitada a teorías de la globalización cultural o de medios. Por el contrario, académicos de la globalización cultural y de los medios que se enfocan en el rol del lenguaje, raramente se refieren al trabajo en la propagación global del inglés. A pesar de esta mutua independencia, por un lado los paradigmas de la globalización cultural y de los medios, y por el otro, aquellos de la globalización del inglés, han desarrollado notablemente líneas similares. El objetivo de este artículo es el de identificar y explicar estas afinidades. Luego de discutir cinco paradigmas mayores en la globalización cultural y de medios, y sus equivalentes en teoría sobre la propagación global del inglés, debatiremos por un enfoque transdisciplinario al estudio de la globalización de la cultura, los medios y el lenguaje.

英语的全球传播是文化与媒体的全球化不可分开的组成部分。尽管如此密切相关,有关英语全球传播的各种理论却主要在孤立的学科领域诸如应用语言学和社会语言学得以探讨,相对来说,这些探讨只是有限地涉及文化或者媒体的全球化理论。与此相反,聚焦于语言作用的文化和媒体全球化学者,很少涉及有关英语全球传播的著述。尽管这种不相往来,一方面是文化和媒体全球化的典范,另一方面是英语全球化的典范,却沿着很是相似的路线演化。本文的目的在于确认和解释这些相似性。在讨论了文化与媒体全球化的五大典范,以及与文化、媒体全球化相对应的英语全球传播典范后,我们提出了一种把文化、媒体和语言的全球化研究结合在一起的跨学科方法。

Глобальное распространение английского языка является неотъемлемой частью процесса глобализации культуры и средств массовой информации. Несмотря на то, что это привело к некоторой запутанности, теории глобального распространения английского языка были, в основном, развиты в отдельных областях, таких как прикладная лингвистика и социолингвистика с относительно ограниченной ссылаемостью на теории глобализации культуры или СМИ. И наоборот, ученые сфер культуры и СМИ, которые сосредотачиваются на роли английского языка, редко обращаются к работе над темой его глобального распространения. Несмотря на эту взаимную независимость парадигмы культуры и СМИ, с одной стороны, и глобализации английского языка с другой,они развились по удивительно похожим линиям. Цель этой статьи состоит в том, чтобы идентифицировать и объяснить эти общие черты. После обсуждения пяти главных парадигм в культурной и СМИ глобализации и их эквивалентов в теории глобального распространения английского языка, мы приведем доводы в пользу междисциплинарного подхода в исследовании глобализации культуры, СМИ и языка.  相似文献

Studies of active personal networks have primarily focused on providing reliable estimates of the size of the network. In this study, we examine how compositional properties of the network and ego characteristics are related to variation in network size. There was a negative relationship between mean emotional closeness and network size, for both related and unrelated networks. Further, there was a distinct upper bound on total network size. These results suggest that there are constraints both on the absolute number of individuals that ego can maintain in the network, and also on the emotional intensity of the relationships that ego can maintain with those individuals.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper considers the extent to which stress-induced illness can be regarded as a personal injury that could give rise to civil action for damages against employers in the UK. It outlines the results of a brief survey of personal injury solicitors, which indicates that claims are already being initiated by employees who allege they have suffered a stress-induced illness. The potential for claims within industrial tribunal cases that have already been decided is also examined. Consideration is given to the hurdles that litigants will have to surmount, such as proving that their condition was in fact caused by some feature of their working conditions, showing that it was foreseeable that they would suffer a stress-based injury, and demonstrating that their employer was in some way at fault. This leads to a questioning of what employers can do to protect themselves from such claims, or at least defend them successfully. The paper points out that success is likely to depend heavily upon the quality of expert medical opinion, and also upon policy conditions that may influence those adjudicating on such cases. It is concluded that the cost of losing claims may be significant, and that employees who ignore the warning signs do so at their peril.  相似文献

Although work-home interference (WHI) refers to a process of negative interaction between the work and home domains, little attention has been paid to the actual processes involved in the within-person, day-to-day management of work and home. Therefore, this study investigated if, and how, a global report for the individual, of WHI (i.e., a general indicator of experienced WHI) is reflected in daily reports of WHI, in employees' daily activity patterns in the work and home domain, and in their daily health and well-being. Effort-Recovery theory (Meijman & Mulder, 1998) provided the theoretical basis for this study. Data were collected among 120 academic staff members (62% male) who completed a general questionnaire, addressing global WHI as well as demographical information, and who also participated in a 5-day daily diary study. WHI was measured using the 8-item WHI subscale of the Survey Work-home Interaction Nijmegen (SWING), with an adapted version being used for the diary studies. Results showed that global WHI: (1) was positively related to daily WHI; (2) was positively related to the time spent daily on overtime work in the evening; (3) was negatively related to the time spent daily on low-effort activities; and (4) was positively related to daily fatigue and sleep complaints. We conclude that Effort-Recovery theory seems promising for the study of WHI, and that diary studies are valuable, as these provide detailed insight into what global reports of WHI actually signify from day to day.  相似文献
