This paper investigates the impact of paper and email contactson web survey response rates. We use six combinations of paperand email prenotifications and reminders to test the impactof mixed-mode contacts. In addition, we use two survey samplesthat differ in their relationship with the sponsoring institutionto test if the impact of contact mode is conditional on relationshipbetween respondents and the survey researchers. Contrary toprevious research, we find little differences in response ratesacross experimental groups.  相似文献

We consider a specific classification problem in the context of change-point detection. We present generalized classical maximum likelihood tests for homogeneity of the observed sample in a simple form which avoids the complex direct estimation of unknown parameters. This paper proposes a martingale approach to transformation of test statistics. For sequential and retrospective testing problems, we propose the adapted Shiryayev–Roberts statistics in order to obtain simple tests with asymptotic power one. An important application of the developed methods is in the analysis of exposure's measurements subject to limits of detection in occupational medicine.  相似文献

Managing change in health care is a complex, poorly studied process that's even more poorly understood. We do not have a clear model to visualize as we contemplate just what it is we are changing. Explore how modern hospitals are "warehousing" patients like excess inventory, and examine the changes needed to escape this morass. A strong physician/hospital alliance is the key to establishing more efficient, patient-centered care.  相似文献

The empirical influence function for Mahalanobis distance and for misclassification rates are presented for discriminant analysis with two multivariate normal populations, following Campbell (1978). Conclusions about the effects of outliers from the empirical influence function are contrasted with exact calculations for four simple cases. These cases demonstrate that the higher-order terms discarded in deriving the empirical influence function can be important in practical problems.  相似文献

Managed care is cultivating a variety of new work careers within the medical profession, and it is worth asking whether they will function as long- or shorter-term career options for the individuals who participate in them. This paper uses the specific case of hospitalist physicians to explore how the surrounding social and economic work contexts contribute to two individual-level outcomes that inform the issue of career longevity: the concepts of burnout and intent to stay in the career. The findings of a national survey of hospitalists reveal that job burnout and intent to remain in the career are more meaningfully associated with favorable social relations involving colleagues, co-workers, and patients than with negative experiences related to the economically induced pressures of the job, such as reduced autonomy and the use of financial incentives. In addition, career longevity is enhanced by the extent to which individual physicians pursue intrinsic and extrinsic rewards through their choices to become hospitalists. These findings demonstrate that sociologists should pay greater attention to the career trajectories of contemporary doctors in order to understand larger scale professional stratification within medicine. They also offer empirical support for redirecting our focus towards the relational dynamics that shape these trajectories.  相似文献

Empirical studies have demonstrated that uncertainty about event probabilities, also known as ambiguity or second-order uncertainty, can affect decision makers choice preferences. Despite the importance of second-order uncertainty in decision making, almost no effort has been directed towards the development of methods that evaluate the accuracy of second-order probabilities. In this paper, we describe conditions under which strictly proper scoring rules can be used to assess the accuracy of second-order probability judgments. We investigate the effectiveness of using a particular strictly proper scoring rule the ranked probability score - to discourage biased assessments of second-order uncertainty.  相似文献
