Subsidized Housing and the Transition to Adulthood

Despite abundant evidence about the effect of children’s socioeconomic circumstances on their transition to adulthood, we know much less about the effect of social policy programs aimed at poor families with children in facilitating how and when children become adults. This issue is particularly important for the U.S. federal subsidized housing program given its long history of placing subsidized units in some of the poorest and most racially segregated neighborhoods. Using counterfactual causal methods that adjust for the length of receipt of subsidized housing, I estimate the effect of subsidized housing on teenage parenthood, household formation, and educational attainment. I find that the subsidized housing program has either null or positive effects on the transition to adulthood and that these effects vary by both race and gender. These results underscore the importance of considering whether social programs have differential effects on the life chances of individuals based on both race and gender.

《四库全书总目》是在乾嘉时期注重辨章考据,崇尚经世致用的实学风气影响下,由官方编纂而成的。《总目》在宋人集部提要中对宋代散文多有批评,呈现出注重文章的教化之品,挖掘文章的经世之用,推崇文章的根柢学养的批评特色。《总目》宋代散文批评具有鲜明的主观色彩,在一定程度上遮蔽了宋代散文发展的真实风貌。对于《总目》宋代文学批评的研究,有助于我们更深入地探究官方的政治意志与时代的学术思潮及其对文学批评的影响。

A feminist perspective on COVID‐19 and the value of care work globally

The shared response to the COVID‐19 crisis demonstrates that the vast majority of society believes human wellbeing — not economic growth — should be at the centre of policy. COVID‐19 exposes the foundational role of care work, both paid and unpaid, to functioning societies and economies. Focusing on ‘production’ instead of the sustainable reproduction of human life devalues care work and those who perform it. Women’s physical and mental health, and the societies that rely on them, are at stake. When these policies are formulated, the field of feminist economics has valuable lessons for mitigating hardships as countries navigate the related economic fallout. A comprehensive response to the COVID‐19 crisis must recognize this gendered work as an integral part of the economic system that promotes human wellbeing for all.

Exercising moral agency in the contexts of objective reality: toward an integrated account of ethical consumption

This paper engages with two contrasting approaches to conceptualising and studying consumer behaviour that appear to dominate existing research on consumption. On one hand, agency‐focused perspectives take an individual consumer to be the primary author of practice and a basic unit of analysis. On the other hand, socio‐centric paradigms focus on the social roots of consumption activities and the wider societal contexts in which they take place. The need to provide a more balanced view of consumption phenomena has been acknowledged, yet not adequately acted upon. This paper begins to fill this gap through relevant theoretical and empirical contributions. First, we provide a critical review of the dominant theoretical perspectives on consumption in general and ethical consumption in particular, highlight their key ontological assumptions and explain how they preclude a fuller understanding of the ways in which consumer practices are moulded and shaped. Taking a critical realist approach, we then present the findings from qualitative analysis of consumers' ethical food practices to empirically demonstrate the role of human agency and social structure in creating and shaping ethical consumption. Thus, by means of theoretical analysis and empirical research this paper responds to the call for a more comprehensive understanding of consumption and provides a consolidated account of consumer behaviour which acknowledges and explains the complex ensemble of individual and systemic powers in which consumer practices are contained.     

农村基础养老金调整与财政负担水平研究

农村制度的建立和运行对解决农村居民养老问题起到了积极作用,但还存在着诸如基础养老金缺乏动态调整机制、中央财政负担水平不适度等问题,制约了养老保险制度的发展与完善。以CPI及农民人均纯收入增长率为假设条件,构建农村基础养老金动态调整机制,得到了动态调整后的农村基础养老金规模,并测算了中央财政的实际负担水平。通过设计农村中央财政适度负担水平模型,测算出中央财政理论适度负担水平,将其与实际负担水平进行比较,得出中央财政完全能够承担调整后基础养老金支付责任。
