This article solves an operational performance measurement problem of a global logistics firm through an internal benchmarking tool. The intended impact is to enable logistics firms to form a deeper understanding of their own internal processes and metrics. The methodology of this in-depth action research involves a sequential approach with a series of interviews, questionnaire-based surveys, operations data collated through observations and process mapping yielding real-world data. A series of statistical tests are conducted to analyse the collated data. Strategic priorities of the firm are integrated with the firm’s operational performance to ascertain the effective performance by considering both the tangible and intangible measures. The outcomes inform both practitioners and academics how the firm could improve its freight forwarding business’s profitability by ensuring that its operations meet the prioritised criteria. The ‘best practice’ derived from internal benchmarking forms an intermediate step towards external benchmarking. The outcomes facilitate investigating the current business strategy, the standard operating procedures and the scope of improving those.  相似文献

In estimating the proportion of people bearing a sensitive attribute A, say, in a given community, following Warner’s (J Am Stat Assoc 60:63–69, 1965) pioneering work, certain randomized response (RR) techniques are available for application. These are intended to ensure efficient and unbiased estimation protecting a respondent’s privacy when it touches a person’s socially stigmatizing feature like rash driving, tax evasion, induced abortion, testing HIV positive, etc. Lanke (Int Stat Rev 44:197–203, 1976), Leysieffer and Warner (J Am Stat Assoc 71:649–656, 1976), Anderson (Int Stat Rev 44:213–217, 1976, Scand J Stat 4:11–19, 1977) and Nayak (Commun Stat Theor Method 23:3303–3321, 1994) among others have discussed how maintenance of efficiency is in conflict with protection of privacy. In their RR-related activities the sample selection is traditionally by simple random sampling (SRS) with replacement (WR). In this paper, an extension of an essential similarity in case of general unequal probability sample selection even without replacement is reported. Large scale surveys overwhelmingly employ complex designs other than SRSWR. So extension of RR techniques to complex designs is essential and hence this paper principally refers to them. New jeopardy measures to protect revelation of secrecy presented here are needed as modifications of those in the literature covering SRSWR alone. Observing that multiple responses are feasible in addressing such a dichotomous situation especially with Kuk’s (Biometrika 77:436–438, 1990) and Christofides’ (Metrika 57:195–200, 2003) RR devices, an average of the response-specific jeopardizing measures is proposed. This measure which is device dependent, could be regarded as a technical characteristic of the device and it should be made known to the participants before they agree to use the randomization device. An application of empirical Bayes and Kalman filtering tecniques is reported, using live data from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta . to illustrate how initial small domain estimators may be vastly improved upon. A stratified two stage sampling procedure is adopted, allowing selection of first stage units with unequal probabilities but of second stage units with equal probabilities. Standard design-based estimators for domain totals are initialized based on domain specific survey data alone. Strength is then borrowed across domains and from past surveys. The resulting gains in efficacy are numlerically demonstrated, through replicated sampling from official records.  相似文献

For the survey population total of a variable y when values of an auxiliary variable x are available a popular procedure is to employ the ratio estimator on drawing a simple random sample without replacement (SRSWOR) especially when the size of the sample is large. To set up a confidence interval for the total, various variance estimators are available to pair with the ratio estimator. We add a few more variance estimators studded with asymptotic design-cum-model properties. The ratio estimator is traditionally known to be appropriate when the regression of y on x is linear through the origin and the conditional variance of y given x is proportional to x. But through a numerical exercise by simulation we find the confidence intervals to fare better if the regression line deviates from the origin or if the conditional variance is disproportionate with x. Also, comparing the confidence intervals using alternative variance estimators we find our newly proposed variance estimators to yield favourably competitive results.  相似文献

In this article, we study the problem of estimating the prevalence rate of a disease in a geographical area, based on data collected from a sample of locations within this area. If there are several locations with zero incidence of the disease, the usual estimators are not suitable and so we develop a new estimator, together with an unbiased estimator of its variance, which may be appropriately used in such situations. An application of this estimator is illustrated with data from a large-scale survey, which was carried out in the city of Kolkata, India, to estimate the prevalence rate of stroke. We show that spatial modelling may be used to smooth the observed data before applying our proposed estimator. Our computations show that this smoothing helps to reduce the coefficient of variation and such a model-cum-design-based procedure is useful for estimating the prevalence rate. This method may of course be used in other similar situations.  相似文献

Two versions of Yates-Grundy type variance estimators are usually employed for large samples when estimating a survey population total by a generalized regression (Greg, in brief) predictor motivated by consideration of a linear regression model. Their two alternative modifications are developed so that the limiting values of the design expectations of the model expectations of variance estimators 'match' respectively the (I) model expectations of the Taylor approximation of the design variance of the Greg predictor and the (II) limiting value of the design expectation of the model expectation of the squared difference between the Greg predictor and the population total. The exercise is extended to yield modifications needed when randomized response (RR) is only available rather than direct response (DR) when one encounters sensitive issues demanding protection of privacy. In estimating the shape parameter of a two-parameter Weibull distribution from a failure-censored sample, a recently popular procedure is to employ a testimator which is a shrinkage estimator based on a preliminary hypothesis test for a guessed value of the parameter. Such an adaptive testimator is a linear compound of the guessed value and a statistic. A new compounding coefficient is numerically shown to yield higher efficiency in many situations compared to some of the existing ones.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to delineate a green supply chain (GSC) performance measurement framework using an intra-organisational collaborative decision-making (CDM) approach. A fuzzy analytic network process (ANP)-based green-balanced scorecard (GrBSc) has been used within the CDM approach to assist in arriving at a consistent, accurate and timely data flow across all cross-functional areas of a business. A green causal relationship is established and linked to the fuzzy ANP approach. The causal relationship involves organisational commitment, eco-design, GSC process, social performance and sustainable performance constructs. Sub-constructs and sub-sub-constructs are also identified and linked to the causal relationship to form a network. The fuzzy ANP approach suitably handles the vagueness of the linguistics information of the CDM approach. The CDM approach is implemented in a UK-based carpet-manufacturing firm. The performance measurement approach, in addition to the traditional financial performance and accounting measures, aids in firm’s decision-making with regard to the overall organisational goals. The implemented approach assists the firm in identifying further requirements of the collaborative data across the supply-cain and information about customers and markets. Overall, the CDM-based GrBSc approach assists managers in deciding if the suppliers’ performances meet the industry and environment standards with effective human resource.  相似文献

Presenting a general procedure of eliciting a randomized response (RR) from selected persons in order to estimate the total of a sensitive variable related to a finite survey population, we consider two estimators along with variance estimators treating the case of sampling with probabilities proportional to (known) size measures (PPS) with replacement (WR), drawing analogies with multi-stage sampling and note their relative efficacies.  相似文献
