Der Sinn der Modelle

With the exception of an indeed important formal detail of the model of frame selection, the criticism of Rohwer both on the model itself and on the general approach to explain divorces is not comprehensible. Partly, it consists of even serious misinterpretations, which are due to the fact that the author is not familiar with important textual backgrounds or did not consider them. Partly, global accusations are being made, which are finally true for any approach, which has not yet solved all problems beforehand, including all current approaches in the research on divorce. Besides the correction of the misinterpretations of the model of frame selection and sociological explanations, this contribution particularly proposes a simple solution of the formal problem.     

Desynchronisation und Populismus

This contribution takes its starting point from the assumption held by a theory of differentiation that the political shaping of society is challenged by an increasing desynchronization of distinct social sub-areas. Drawing upon the example of financial market regulation, we demonstrate how this political shaping capability is to a great extent successfully sustained or retrieved through the employment of hybrid organizations such as the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), of which we undertake an in-depth analysis in this paper. However, this comes at the prize of another (vertical) desynchronization at the intersection of well-established political institutions and the elementary processes of the formation of a democratic will. As a consequence, we develop an interpretation of post-democratic tendencies that exceeds common diagnoses of post-democracy and populism by offering a structural-temporal explanation of the perception that the formation of a democratic will and the political establishment are drifting apart.     

Produktdiversifizierung und Unternehmenserfolg: Nutzung der Forschungsdatenzentren der Statistischen ?mter

Zusammenfassung: Im Rahmen seiner industrie?konomischen Forschung beabsichtigt das DIW Berlin das Verhalten von Unternehmen auf den Produktm?rkten intensiver zu analysieren. In einem ersten Schritt soll der Zusammenhang zwischen Produktdiversifizierung, der Einführung neuer Produkte und dem Erfolg von Unternehmen im verarbeitenden Gewerbe untersucht werden. Dies soll mit Hilfe einer ?konometrischen Panelanalyse auf der Grundlage von Mikrodaten von Unternehmen erfolgen. Statt des in der Arbeitsmarktforschung üblichen Employer-Employee Datensatzes wird für diesen Zweck ein Producer-Product Datensatz ben?tigt. Erstmals sollen diese Mikrodaten im Rahmen einer Panelanalyse durch die Forschung ausgewertet werden. Dabei werden zwei getrennt durchgeführte Erhebungen, die Kostenstrukturerhebung und die Produktionserhebung, für einzelne Unternehmen zusammengefasst. M?glich wird dieses Forschungsvorhaben durch die Nutzung des auf Empfehlung der Kommission zur Verbesserung der informationellen Infrastruktur neu eingerichteten Forschungsdatenzentrums (FDZ). Das vorliegende Papier berichtet über das Forschungskonzept und die bisher erfolgten Schritte bei der Nutzung der Forschungsdatenzentren des Bundes und der L?nder am regionalen Standort Berlin.

Summary: For a better understanding of the strategies of firms on their product markets, the DIW Berlin intends to intensify the analysis on the relationship between product diversification, including the introduction of new products and the success of firms. It is planned to do this by applying econometric panel methods on micro level data for German manufacturing enterprises. For this objective, it is necessary to create a producer-product database. This affords the merging of two different datasets of the system of surveys in manufacturing for Germany. The cost structure survey supplies information on the operating surplus of individual firms, while the production survey supplies the information on the goods produced by these firms. Conducting such an ambitious project has now been made possible in using the newly installed Research Data Centres (FDZ) for Germany. This paper gives an overview on the research project and on first experiences with the use of the local Research Data Centre in Berlin.

Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag antwortet auf den in dieser Zeitschrift erschienenen Artikel „Moderater methodologischer Holismus. Eine weberianische Interpretation des Makro-Mikro-Makro-Modells” von Gert Albert (Jg. 57, 2005, S. 387—414) und die dort vertretene Hypothese, dass das Modell der soziologischen Erkl?rung weder die Berücksichtigung makrosozialer Strukturen, noch den Einbezug historischer Prozesse erlaube. Es wird gezeigt, dass diese These allenfalls für die von Coleman vertretene Version des Modells zutrifft, nicht aber für die inzwischen vorliegende Erweiterung, insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund der darin an zentraler Stelle vorkommenden Konzepte der sozialen Produktionsfunktionen, des Modells der Frame-Selektion und der Entwicklung von idealtypischen Strukturmodellen historisch-spezifischer Zusammenh?nge.     

In guten wie in schlechten Tagen?

In this contribution the model of frame-selection as an approach to integrate “normative” and “rational” action is being used for the explanation of divorce, operationalized and empirically tested with data of the Mannheim Divorce Study. Not only the evident effect of the “framing” of marriage at the beginning on the subsequent stability of marriage is shown, even after introducing control variables, but also a non-trivial interaction that is predicted by the model and that can be regarded as a “hard” test of it, namely the interaction of the framing of marriage with the belonging to a certain marriage cohort. At the same time this contribution is also discussing possibilities and advantages of a “general” theory of action for the social sciences in general.
