Unemployment in Urban China: an Analysis of Survey Data from Shanghai

Abstract. We analyse the unemployment problem in the largest Chinese city, Shanghai, based on a survey of the unemployed conducted in late 1989. We find, as expected, that unemployment is particularly serious among school-leavers and contract and temporary workers, but also find a surprisingly high incidence of unemployment amongst permanent state employees and relatively long unemployment durations. The Shanghai unemployed rely heavily on occasional work for support, and only a small proportion-receive state benefit. We identify problems of interpretation stemming from the stock-sampling nature of the survey, and use non-parametric methods to reveal an underlying strong downward movement in individual re-employment probabilities.     

On selecting from k finite populations the population with the largest α -quantile

Several procedures for ranking populations according to the quantile of a given order have been discussed in the literature. These procedures deal with continuous distributions. This paper deals with the problem of selecting a population with the largest α-quantile from k ≥ 2 finite populatins, where the size of each population is known. A selection rule is given based on the sample quantiles, where he samples are drawn without replacement. A formula for the minimum probability of a correct selection for the given rule, for a certain configuration of the population α-quantiles, is given in terms of the sample numbers.     

Recurrence relations for single and product moments of generalized order statistics from Marshall–Olkin extended Pareto distributions

Marshall and Olkin (1997 Marshall, A.W., Olkin, I. (1997). A new method for adding a parameter to a family of distributions with application to the exponential and Weibull families. Biometrika 84(3):641–652.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) introduced a new method of adding parameter to expand a family of distributions. Using this concept, in this article, the Marshall–Olkin extended Pareto distribution is introduced and some recurrence relations for single and product moments of generalized order statistics are studied. Also the results are deduced for record values and order statistics.
