This paper reviews recent attempts to model cooperation in groups of self-interested unrelated individuals. It concludes that no empirically plausible model has been developed, and the economist's quest for an explanation of human prosociality in terms of self-interested agents has not been successful. We show that the equilibrium criteria employed in standard game-theoretic models have no attractive dynamic properties, and the mechanisms deployed in these models are not generally seen in empirical examples of cooperative groups. We also show that these models are not robust to plausible rates of signaling error and mutation. We present an alternative, involving strongly reciprocal agents, that satisfies all the requirements for a dynamically stable model of cooperation. 相似文献
Attitudes toward the role of women in the military require the reconciliation of two often conflicting beliefs: those toward
the roles and rights of women and those toward the military. This article explores the relationships between positive attitudes
toward women’s roles throughout society, or feminism, and positive attitudes toward defense spending, or militarism, both
with each other and with attitudes toward gender integration in the military. Results of this analysis show there to be a
negative relationship between feminism and militarism, a positive relationship between feminism and gender integration, and
a negative relationship between militarism and gender integration. The results of multiple regression analysis show that feminism
is the strongest predictor of attitudes toward gender integration, while militarism is weak in its predictive ability. The
author argues that the issue of women in the military is more one of women’s equality than of national defense and that policy
discussions should be structured accordingly.
She is currently conducting research which examines how women in the United States military employ strategies to manage gender
and sexuality. This research provides evidence for the claim that gender is not simply a role or an attribute, but that gender
is created and recreated through our interactions with others. 相似文献
Over the first years of life, infants gradually develop the ability to retrieve their memories across cue and contextual changes. Whereas maturational factors drive some of these developments in memory ability, experiences occurring within the learning event may also impact infants' ability to retrieve memories in new situations. In 2 experiments we examined whether it was possible to facilitate 12‐month‐old infants' generalization of learning in the deferred imitation paradigm by varying experiences before or during the demonstration session, or during the retention interval. In Experiment 1, altering the length, timing, or variability of training had no impact on generalization; infants showed a low, but consistent level of memory retrieval. In Experiment 2, infants who experienced a unique context for encoding and retrieval exhibited generalization; infants who experienced the context prior to the demonstration session, or during the retention interval, did not. Specificity is a robust feature of infant memory and is not substantially altered by encoding experiences in an observational learning paradigm. Previous history with a learning environment can, however, impact the flexibility of memory retrieval. 相似文献
