Bivariate Bernoulli and bivariate geometric distributions are proposed to model reciprocity in weighted and unweighted networks. Sampling properties of commonly used reciprocity measures are studied, under both presence and absence of reciprocity. Extensions to situations where link parameters depend on outgoing and incoming nodes are investigated. Results are illustrated with a data set, on 50 anesthesia providers at a hospital, that describes the number of times an anesthesia provider starting an operation transfers his/her responsibilities to another anesthesia provider.  相似文献

This article takes a hierarchical model approach to the estimation of state space models with diffuse initial conditions. An initial state is said to be diffuse when it cannot be assigned a proper prior distribution. In state space models this occurs either when fixed effects are present or when modelling nonstationarity in the state transition equation. Whereas much of the literature views diffuse states as an initialization problem, we follow the approach of Sallas and Harville (1981,1988) and incorporate diffuse initial conditions via noninformative prior distributions into hierarchical linear models. We apply existing results to derive the restricted loglike-lihood and appropriate modifications to the standard Kalman filter and smoother. Our approach results in a better understanding of De Jong's (1991) contributions. This article also shows how to adjust the standard Kalman filter, the fixed inter- val smoother and the state space model forecasting recursions, together with their mean square errors, for he presence of diffuse components. Using a hierarchical model approach it is shown that the estimates obtained are Best Linear Unbiased Predictors (BLUP).  相似文献

Time series smoothers estimate the level of a time series at time t as its conditional expectation given present, past and future observations, with the smoothed value depending on the estimated time series model. Alternatively, local polynomial regressions on time can be used to estimate the level, with the implied smoothed value depending on the weight function and the bandwidth in the local linear least squares fit. In this article we compare the two smoothing approaches and describe their similarities. Through simulations, we assess the increase in the mean square error that results when approximating the estimated optimal time series smoother with the local regression estimate of the level.  相似文献

A study is carried out of a sampling from a half-normal and exponential distributions to develop a test of hypothesis on the mean. Although these distributions are similar, the corresponding uniformly most paerful test statistics are different. The exact distributions of these statistics my be written in terms of the incomplete gamma function. If the experimental data my be fitted by either distributions, it is advisable to carryout the test based on the half-normal distribution as it is generally more powerful than the one based on the exponential one.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the recursive (or on line) estimation in (i) regression and (ii) autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) time series models. The adopted approach uses Kalman filtering techniques to calculate estimates recursively. This approach is used for the estimation of constant as well as time varying parameters. In the first section of the paper we consider the linear regression model. We discuss recursive estimation both for constant and time varying parameters. For constant parameters, Kalman filtering specializes to recursive least squares. In general, we allow the parameters to vary according to an autoregressive integrated moving average process and update the parameter estimates recursively. Since the stochastic model for the parameter changes will "be rarely known, simplifying assumptions have to be made. In particular we assume a random walk model for the time varying parameters and show how to determine whether the parameters are changing over time. This is illustrated with an example.  相似文献

Introductory statistics courses should incorporate unstructured projects where students themselves generate the problems they choose to study, gather their own data, analyze the information using suitable computer software, and communicate their findings in a report. This article describes my experience with projects in the context of a large lecture course where projects are carried out in groups. Special problems that arise with group projects are discussed. The least squares estimate of the autoregressive coefficient in the AR(1) model is known to be biased towards zero, especially for parameters close to the stationarity boundary. Several methods for correcting the autoregressive parameter estimate for the bias have been suggested. Using simulations, we study the bias and the mean square error of the least squares estimate and the bias-corrections proposed by Kendall and Quenouille.

We also study the mean square forecast error and the coverage of the 95% prediction interval when using the biased least squares estimate or one of its bias-corrected versions. We find that the estimation bias matters little for point forecasts, but that it affects the coverage of the prediction intervals. Prediction intervals for forecasts more than one step ahead, when calculated with the biased least squares estimate, are too narrow.  相似文献
