We can only welcome the discourse that has been initiated in our professional community with the concept of public sociology
in the focus. Undoubtedly, Michael Burawoy has indisputable merits in fuelling this international dialogue. I find, however,
that his position and conceptual framework is debatable at several points, therefore my review is on the side of those who
criticize his ideas. My paper is divided into three parts: in keeping with the idea that the drop mirrors the ocean, I will
start with the detailed critique of a single paragraph—the one which makes comments on his table entitled Types of sociological knowledge. It will be argued that by switching his viewpoints and using vaguely defined notions without empirical evidences he often
tackles his subject inconsistently. Secondly, I intend to offer an alternative, three-dimensional conceptual model in which
the social scientist’s prestige, influence and position on the action chain is taken into account as the main analytical aspects
of the relationship between her/him and the public. Finally, based on this model, I propose to identify some strategies in
order to find a better balance between the public and professional activity of social scientists. 相似文献

Changes in working time have important economic, social and environmental implications. However, research on workers' preferences is highly fragmented across disciplines and journals. To overcome this, the present article provides a systematic review of the literature, analysing 173 studies. The study shows that working-time outcomes and mismatches are mostly studied in a small group of OECD countries, using survey data and statistical methods. The most clear and consistent results are about gender, care responsibilities and current working hours. Among professions, only the medical workforce receives substantial attention. Norms and preference formation are poorly understood, and more qualitative research is essential to understand how working-time reductions could spread. 相似文献

In recent years several regions have created development strategies to strengthen the regional economic and innovation contribution of universities. Still, it is not at all obvious whether universities’ significant regional contribution is a rule or rather an exception, especially in transition and less developed areas. Present paper addresses three crucial fields that seem to be problematic in the literature. First, we analyze universities’ regional contribution in a transition economy, namely in Hungary. Second we attempt to capture territorial innovation performance by applying an innovation system based approach. Third, we carry out a nationwide analysis on a subregional level. We conclude that regional contributions of Hungarian higher education institutions are modest, way too forceless to catalyze the local economy. 相似文献
