笔者认为哲学必须要“解决时代提出的问题”,“阐明事物的本质”,哲学具有完成这一任务的“可能性”。在全球化时代,哲学尤其要解决由“市场竞争”导致的精神问题以及其它全球性问题。现代已经成为最需要哲学的时代。     

How Can One be a Boxer? : Pain and Pleasure in a Manila's Boxing Camp

This paper is an ethnographic account of daily life at a boxing gym in Manila in the Philippines. My book, Rokaru Boxer to Hinkon Sekai conducts a social analysis of three different topics in order to grasp the lives of Manilan boxers on both theoretical and empirical grounds—namely, daily life at a boxing gym, an international boxing market structure in which Filipino boxers are consumed as underdog roles, and the daily life in Manila's squatter areas to which the boxers are closely tied. The current study limits its examination to daily life in a boxing gym. Most of the unique characteristics that influence Filipino boxing can be found in the live-in residencies of its gyms. The gym is a place for training and living. It is not only by training but also as a result of various aspects of their life here that young men are able to become boxers. Unlike the gym in the African American ghetto described by Loïc Wacquant, participating youths in Filipino boxing come from the absolute lowest tiers of society. The youths live in boxing camps where every aspect of their daily live is strictly regulated, and thus are they inscribed with the rules that must be observed in this sport. This study is an examination of the pains and pleasures of life at one such boxing camp.     

Elder Abuse and Oral Health Care Providers: An Intervention to Increase Knowledge and Self-Perceived Likelihood to Report

The objective of this study was to ascertain whether a symposium on elder abuse raises the level of knowledge and the self-reported likelihood to report elder abuse among licensed oral health care providers. 130 dentists, hygienists, and assistants voluntarily attended a 4-hour training symposium and completed both pre- and postsurveys testing their level of knowledge. Results by statistical analyses, using repeated measurements, Wilcoxon signed-rank test for nonparametric data, showed increases in awareness of reporting process, knowledge/awareness of elder abuse, knowledge of mandated reporter requirements, and comfort levels with recognizing signs and symptoms of elder abuse and neglect. In conclusion, a symposium can increase the self-reported likelihood of reporting elder abuse.     

THE IMPACT OF TRADE LIBERALIZATION ON INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTIVITY

An empirical finding by Trefler (2004, “The Long and Short of the Canada–U.S. Free Trade Agreement”, American Economic Review, 94(4), 870–895) and others that industrial productivity increases more strongly in liberalized industries than in nonliberalized industries has been widely accepted as evidence for the Melitz ( 2003 , “The Impact of Trade on Intra‐Industry Reallocations and Aggregate Industry Productivity”, Econometrica, 71, 1695–1725) model. We show that under fairly standard assumptions a multi‐industry version of the Melitz model does not predict this relationship. Instead, it predicts the opposite relationship that industrial productivity increases more strongly in nonliberalized industries than in liberalized industries.

A Family Which Integrates the Generalized Charlier Series and Extended Noncentral Negative Binomial Distributions

The generalized Charlier series distribution includes the binomial distribution, and the noncentral negative binomial distribution extends the negative binomial distribution. The present article proposes a family of counting distributions, which contains both the generalized Charlier series and extended noncentral negative binomial distributions. Compound and mixture formulations of the proposed distribution are given. The probability mass function is expressible in terms of the confluent hypergeometric function as well as the Gauss hypergeometric function. Recursive formulae for probability mass function have been studied by Panjer, Sundt and Jewell, Schröter, Sundt, and Kitano et al. in the context of insurance risk. This article explores horizontal, vertical, triangular, and diagonal recursions. Recursive formulae as well as exact expressions for descending factorial moments are studied. The proposed distribution allows overdispersion or underdispersion relative to a Poisson distribution. An illustrative example of data fitting is given.
