Social work educators, employers and policy-makers have increasingly recognised the importance of continuing professional development. The UK social work qualification (DipSW) provides a broad base of practice skills, knowledge and values. However, increasingly complex work, frequent legislative and policy changes, research findings and challenges of working in a societal context of increasing change and diversity all contribute to the necessity of developing strategies for continuing professional development which adequately equip social workers. Such education cannot be alienated from social workers' employment context, and thus needs to remain mindful of employers' needs while concurrently maintaining academic rigour. This paper explores the development and delivery of a year-long post-qualifying training course run collaboratively between West Sussex Social and Caring Services and University College Chichester. It places some of the experiences of tutors, candidates and Training and Development Officers within the wider context of social work education, training and the delivery of social care. In exploring some of the contradictions and tensions experienced it seeks to further understand the challenge of delivering effective training in an increasingly complex and fragmented arena. Finally, it considers possible future developments, mindful of future changes in UK social work education.  相似文献

E-mail: k.postle{at}ucc.ac.uk Summary Social work began, and has continued to exist, in a state ofambiguity and tension, experiencing the difficulties inherentin exercising both compassion and control, and mediating betweenthe state and the individual. This article draws on recent researchundertaken with care managers working with older people in twosocial services offices to argue that this uncertain and uncomfortableposition has been exacerbated by changes since the inceptionof the NHS and Community Care Act 1990. Care managers are, forexample, trying to reconcile spending more time on paperworkand computer work with having less time for making and workingwithin relationships with people. While their work is becomingincreasingly complex, many of the processes for dealing withit are becoming increasingly reductionist. The author arguesthat this increase in tension and ambiguity influences caremanagers' working conditions, thus contributing to increasedstress levels and resultant staffing problems and affectingthe quality of service given to older people. Some possibilitiesfor optimism exist in re-evaluating the importance of the corenature of the social work relationship and reconsidering linksbetween training and practice.  相似文献

Given a configuration of pebbles on the vertices of a connected graph G, a pebbling move removes two pebbles from some vertex and places one pebble on an adjacent vertex. The pebbling number of a graph G is the smallest integer k such that for each vertex v and each configuration of k pebbles on G there is a sequence of pebbling moves that places at least one pebble on v. First, we improve on results of Hurlbert, who introduced a linear optimization technique for graph pebbling. In particular, we use a different set of weight functions, based on graphs more general than trees. We apply this new idea to some graphs from Hurlbert’s paper to give improved bounds on their pebbling numbers. Second, we investigate the structure of Class 0 graphs with few edges. We show that every n-vertex Class 0 graph has at least \(\frac{5}{3}n - \frac{11}{3}\) edges. This disproves a conjecture of Blasiak et al. For diameter 2 graphs, we strengthen this lower bound to \(2n - 5\), which is best possible. Further, we characterize the graphs where the bound holds with equality and extend the argument to obtain an identical bound for diameter 2 graphs with no cut-vertex.  相似文献

This paper draws on literature and on a recent workshop run for social work educators to outline important considerations in detecting and deterring plagiarism. Plagiarism, greatly facilitated by the use of the Internet, is increasing among students in higher education and there is evidence to suggest that students on social work courses are no less likely to plagiarise than other students. This paper addresses the importance of detecting plagiarism in students who will go on to work in professional practice but, importantly, highlights the importance of deterring plagiarism in order to maximise students' learning, thus enabling their fitness for practice. Conclusions are drawn for learning, teaching and assessment strategies.  相似文献

This paper explores a citizen-based approach to social workwhich may counter modern negative managerialist pressures onpractice. It links the discourse concerning the growth of userinvolvement in public policy with the discourse about participationin political activity and suggests a role for social workersin supporting service users in initiatives such as self-help,campaigning and community action which offer a new interpretationof community-based social work. By engaging in this activity,health and social care professionals can support people to participatein emerging forms of active and inclusive citizenship. Whileparticipation in traditional political activity such as votingand political party membership is declining in the UK, peoplein marginalized groups are finding ways to have their voicesheard about issues which directly concern them. Increasingly,groups such as disabled people, older people and mental healthservice users/survivors are taking part in activity which marksa shift of focus to include both self-help and campaigning.In contrast to their disillusion with traditional politicalactivity, people across a range of groups have gained strengthand encouragement from campaigning achievements. The paper drawson a national research study which offers fresh insights onthese issues as a basis for exploring participative approachesto social work practice.  相似文献
