Many professionals working in the wake of communal disasters are doubly exposed to the disaster, both as professionals and
as members of the stricken community. Yet most studies of widely reported distress of these professionals examine manifestations
like compassion fatigue, secondary traumatization, and vicarious traumatization, which do not take this double exposure into
account. Moreover, these measures reflect the assumption that their distress is rooted in empathy with their clients or helpees.
This paper argues that at least some of their distress derives from a self-perceived lapse of empathy. It contends that professionals
living and working in a disaster stricken community are caught in a trap of conflicting inner needs stemming from the defenses
they mobilize to cope with the heightened mortality salience aroused by communal disasters. Furthermore, it proposes an etiology
of their distress. 相似文献

This paper examines the challenges faced by female Ultra-Orthodox students in a social work program designed for the Ultra-Orthodox community in Israel. Findings were obtained from four focus groups with a total of 32 students. The participants reported being exposed to contents that were inconsistent with the perspectives of their community, fieldwork expectations and requirements that violated strict rules of gender separation, and inconvenient scheduling of exams and field trips that did not take their religious observances into consideration. Despite the considerable distress that these matters caused, most of the students made determined efforts to cope, to learn the course material, to carry out their fieldwork assignments, and to reconcile the discrepancies between some of the contents they learned and behaviors that were expected of them and their deeply held values and ways. Implications of the findings are discussed and recommendations made. 相似文献

The therapeutic dyad of clinician and client affiliated with rival groups in a violent conflict shares many features that
complicate psychotherapy with persons of different ethnic, racial, and cultural groups, including lack of knowledge, negative
stereotyping, differences in fundamental values and world views, and power differentials. Although a great deal has been written
about these matters, very little has been written about the therapeutic dynamic where therapist and client are affiliated
with different sides of a violent political conflict. Based on the sparse literature on the subject and on the clinical experiences
of the author and her colleagues, this paper discusses three features that characterize this dynamic, which do not appear
in the same way in therapy involving dyads of different races, ethnic groups, or cultures. These are the presence of the “enemy”
in the consulting room, the therapist’s feelings of mistrust towards the client as a representative of the opposing group,
and the client’s feelings of guilt towards the therapist as a representative of the injured group. The impacts of each feature
on the therapist, client, and the therapeutic encounter are explored and suggestions are made for dealing with them. The hope
is that professionals’ awareness of these issues will help improve the quality of psychotherapy with persons on the rival
side of a violent political conflict. 相似文献

This paper explores the “separation guilt” of women who initiate divorce. The paper argues that the gender-specific processes
of separation individuation and socialization that women undergo in childhood make them vulnerable to similar guilt feelings
when they initiate divorce, only towards the husband they are leaving. It further argues that these feelings may impair their
post-divorce adjustment. The paper illustrates these points with two case studies, one showing how the woman’s separation
guilt thwarted the development of new intimacy, the other showing how it impaired her maternal functioning. Recommendations
are made for treatment and research.

A KLEINIAN PERSPECTIVE ON THE DIVORCE PROCESS: FROM THE PARANOID-SCHIZOID TO THE DEPRESSIVE POSITION
Nehami Baum Ph.D. 《Clinical Social Work Journal》2006,34(3):279-292
This paper looks at the divorce process from the perspective of Kleinan theory. It argues that during the early stages of divorce, most persons are in Klein’s paranoid-schizoid position, characterized by splitting and persecutory anxiety, and that they move on to the depressive position, characterized by sadness and longing, only later. The movement occurs as the separated or divorced individual becomes able to tolerate ambivalence, and thus to integrate both the loved and hated aspects of the former spouse and marriage. The paper illustrates the claim in three case studies and recommendations are made for treatment and research.Nehami Baum Ph.D. is a lecturer of the School of Social Work at Bar Ilan University. This study investigates the associations between clients’ emotional and behavioral responses to treatment termination and eight sets of indepentent variables, covering the source of termination (client, therapist, external source); the termination process (speed, centrality, control, choice, and desire), and the perceived outcome (failure, goal achievement) of the therapy. Subjects were 92 student therapists and 40 professional therapists, who reported on their clients’ perceptions, experiences, and responses. All the variables examined were associated with one or another client response. The findings support the view of treatment termination not only as a loss experience but also as a transition. They highlight the need for therapists to pay careful attention to both the source and the process of treatment termination. 相似文献

The study, based on in-depth interviews with 15 fathers in Israel, reports on fathers' emotional reactions to the court-ordered removal of their children from home. The findings show that all the fathers experienced the removal as a traumatic event, which utterly devalued them and annihilated their paternal identity. Although they suffered intense pain and loss well after their children were removed, their grief was disenfranchised as friends and family accused them of allowing the removal to happen. With this, most of the fathers acclimated to the removal and even reported an expansion of their parental identity. The discussion suggests some theoretical conceptualizations of their intense feelings of pain and loss. 相似文献

This paper compares the degree and nature of anxiety experienced by American and Israeli social work students as they anticipate beginning field placement. Despite having greater prior exposure to social work through relevant coursework and experience, American students were significantly more anxious than Israeli ones. Overall, Americans reported a slightly higher sense of preparedness, but this difference was not statistically significant. While there were some shared worries, notably regarding the quantity and quality of field instruction, and their capacity to meet both field and academic obligations, specific concerns regarding field agencies, clients, and social work education differed between the groups, likely reflecting the distinct social, cultural, historical and educational contexts. Implications for social work education and future research are discussed. 相似文献

This study examines the responses of social work students to the wave of terror of the Second Intifada, focusing on issues of professional identity raised by the terror. The study, based on statements of students who lost meaningful persons in the terror and on class discussions, identifies four key issues involving the formation of the students' professional identity that were accentuated by the terror. These are: (1) the conflict between personal needs and professional needs; (2) doubts about professional competence; (3) the conflict between carving out personal space and meeting professional responsibilities, and (4) the difficulties of doing fieldwork under terror. The study also observes the discomfort of the Arab students in the situation. 相似文献

This article addresses courtship and mate selection patterns of young adults who belong to two parallel cultures: traditional and modern. In-depth interviews with 36 Modern-Orthodox Jewish men and women during their first year of marriage reveal unique considerations for mate selection and the dynamic flow between cultural systems. The findings show that dating is marriage-oriented but within a modern context. Although the study participants used modern tools and concepts, the marriage decision itself was bound to strict social norms and traditional expectations. The decision was based largely on rational reasoning, whereas love and personal needs were rarely discussed. The findings highlight the challenges faced by couples with bicultural identity in their transition to matrimony and can support professionals in addressing these conflicts. 相似文献
