Self-forgiveness is generally understood to be a mechanism that restores and improves the self. In the current study, we examine the possible deleterious consequences of forgiving the self among gamblers-specifically in regard to gamblers' readiness to change their problematic behavior. At a large Canadian university, 110 young adult gamblers' level of gambling pathology was assessed, along with their readiness to change and self-forgiveness for their gambling. Participants were 33 females and 75 males (2 unspecified) with a mean age of 20.33. Results revealed that level of pathology (at risk vs. problem gamblers) significantly predicted increased readiness to change. Self-forgiveness mediated this relationship, such that level of gambling pathology increased readiness to change to the extent that participants were relatively unforgiving of their gambling. Implications for seeking professional assistance as well as treatment and recovery are discussed. 相似文献

Objective. Research on widespread loan failures suggests that many of the mortgage loans that were made since 2000 were of a deceptive or predatory nature. This study explores the experiences and sentiments of those who are at risk of foreclosure within a broader framework of trust, individualization, and ontological security. Methods. Interviews examine families' lending experience and how they have coped with their personal troubles that resulted from their housing crisis. Results. As many of these loans were of a deceptive or predatory nature, individuals are likely to reflect on the psychological consequences of their predicament. Although these findings suggest that these individuals have lost trust in the housing market, many have internalized their situation as a personal failure. In addition, feelings of anxiety, stress, insecurity, and uncertainty have come to characterize their experiences. Conclusions. This research calls for policy recommendations that seek to restore confidence and to ensure greater consumer protection in financial markets. 相似文献

This paper tackles the practical application of statistical tools. Chemical development is a rich area for collaboration between statisticians and chemists, but most statisticians encounter difficulties in promoting the tools to this client group. This paper, presented from a chemist's perspective, is intended to help bridge the gap between the two professions. The paper explores differences in uptake and attitudes towards adopting these techniques and suggests what has hindered or helped the process of effective application of experimental design. This article explores the sociolinguistic perception of morphosyntactic variation, using sociolinguistic priming experiments. Two experiments tested participants' perception of the connection between social status and variation in two English subject‐verb agreement constructions: there's+NP and NP+don't. Experiment 1 tested sentence perception and found that exposure to non‐standard agreement boosted the perception of non‐standard agreement, but only for there's+NP. Social status cues had no effect on sentence perception. Experiment 2 tested speaker perception and found that participants were more likely to believe that non‐standard agreement was produced by low‐status than high‐status speakers. Results suggest that, especially for heavily stigmatized variables, non‐standard sentences strongly constrain the social judgments made by speakers, yet social cues do not necessarily constrain linguistic perception. The results suggest that the perceptual relationship between linguistic and social knowledge may be one of only limited bidirectionality. Implications for sociolinguistic perception and exemplar‐theoretic accounts of sociolinguistic competence are discussed. 相似文献

Using data collected from sixty-five nonacademic employers, who either advertised in the ASA Employment Bulletin between January 1979 and January 1981 or who registered with the employment service at the ASA annual meetings in 1979 or 1980, we examine what nonacademic employers are looking for when they recruit sociologists, how they recruit such employees, what tasks employers assign sociologists, and what they perceive to be the major shortcomings of sociologists they have hired. Guiding the inquiry is our belief that programs and policies for expanding nonacademic job opportunities and the arguments for increasing the emphasis placed on applied sociology in graduate training have been more concerned with molding individuals to fit certain perceived occupational roles outside of academia than with training sociologists. We suggest that an uncritical acceptance of the nature of demand in the current labor market may ultimately lead to a deskilling of the sociological profession and the homogenization of the nonacademic labor markets open to social scientists. 相似文献

The way in which rules impact workplace performance has been a topic of discussion in the Organizational Behavior Management literature for some time. Despite this interest, there is a dearth of empirical research on the topic. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of rules and goal setting in the workplace. Participants included two employees at an intensive residential treatment facility. The dependent variable was the percentage of sign-out / sign-in cells completed on a daily checklist. During ba-seline, data were collected on the percentage of cells correctly completed. During the treatment evaluation phase, employees were given 1 of 2 randomly assigned goal-rules in an alternating fashion: a praise goal-rule and a reprimand goal-rule. The corresponding contingency described in the goal-rule (i.e., praise or reprimand) was delivered contingent upon employee goal completion. Results showed that performance increased over baseline levels after the introduction of the goal-rules. In addition, slight differences in pe-rformance between the two types of goal-rules were noted for each participant. 相似文献

The ethics-economics-policy paradigm: The foundation for an integrated land trust conservation decision-support model 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper sets forth a transdisciplinary approach, based upon current trans-Atlantic research carried out in Britain and the U.S., on the complex and interdisciplinary relationship of the ethics-economics-policy paradigm. To provide the proper associations within the land trust framework, the paradigm is viewed from the little explored private lands perspective.The results of interviews carried out with conservation professionals in Britain and the U.S. indicate a strong desire to use a more integrated framework to facilitate the decision-making process. Approximately 96% of the 139 land trusts interviewed felt that their organization's conservation efforts would ultimately be enhanced through the use of a decision-support tool that extended beyond traditional ecological criteria and constraints and incorporated both qualitative social and quantitative economic information. To this end, this paper will both examine the current status of land trust decisions making and frame the fundamentals and dimensions (e.g., land resources, sustainability, community, environment, etc.) of the ethics-economics-policy paradigm.The conceptual integrated land conservation decision-support (ILCDS) model is introduced. Aims of the model, as prescribed by the ethics-economics-policy paradigm, are to integrate concerns of economic efficiency, equity (between and within generations), behavioral models of resource use and ecological integrity, and other patterns of human and economic development within a private land–land trust context. 相似文献
