Elliptically contoured distributions can be considered to be the distributions for which the contours of the density functions are proportional ellipsoids. We generalize elliptically contoured densities to “star-shaped distributions” with concentric star-shaped contours and show that many results in the former case continue to hold in the more general case. We develop a general theory in the framework of abstract group invariance so that the results can be applied to other cases as well, especially those involving random matrices.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Choosing the plotting positions for the QQ-plot has been a subject of much debate in the statistical and engineering literature. This paper looks at this problem objectively by considering three frameworks: distribution-theoretic; decision-theoretic; game-theoretic. In each framework, we derive the plotting positions and show that there are more than one legitimate solution depending on the practitioner’s objective. This work clarifies the choice of the plotting positions by allowing one to easily find the mathematical equivalent of their view and choose the corresponding solution. This work also discusses approximations to the plotting positions when no closed form is available.  相似文献

Takemura and Sheena [A. Takemura, Y. Sheena, Distribution of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of Wishart matrix when the population eigenvalues are infinitely dispersed and its application to minimax estimation of covariance matrix, J. Multivariate Anal. 94 (2005) 271–299] derived the asymptotic joint distribution of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of a Wishart matrix when the population eigenvalues become infinitely dispersed. They also showed necessary conditions for an estimator of the population covariance matrix to be tail minimax for typical loss functions by calculating the asymptotic risk of the estimator. In this paper, we further examine those distributions and risks by means of an asymptotic expansion. We obtain the asymptotic expansion of the distribution function of relevant elements of the sample eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We also derive the asymptotic expansion of the risk function of a scale and orthogonally equivariant estimator with respect to Stein’s loss. As an application, we prove non-minimaxity of Stein’s and Haff’s estimators, which has been an open problem for a long time.  相似文献

The Euler characteristic heuristic has been proposed as a method for approximating the upper tail probability of the maximum of a random field with smooth sample path. When the random field is Gaussian, this method is proved to be valid in the sense that the relative approximation error is exponentially smaller. However, very little is known about the validity of the method when the random field is non-Gaussian. In this paper, as a milestone to developing the general theory about the validity of the Euler characteristic heuristic, we examine the Euler characteristic heuristic for approximating the distribution of the largest eigenvalue of an orthogonally invariant non-Gaussian random matrix. In this particular example, if the probability density function of the random matrix converges to zero sufficiently fast at the boundary of its support, the approximation error of the Euler characteristic heuristic is proved to be small and the approximation is valid. Moreover, for several standard orthogonally invariant random matrices, the approximation formula for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue and its asymptotic error are obtained explicitly. Our formulas are practical enough for the purpose of numerical calculations.  相似文献

We consider conditional exact tests of factor effects in designed experiments for discrete response variables. Similarly to the analysis of contingency tables, a Markov chain Monte Carlo method can be used for performing exact tests, when large-sample approximations are poor and the enumeration of the conditional sample space is infeasible. For designed experiments with a single observation for each run, we formulate log-linear or logistic models and consider a connected Markov chain over an appropriate sample space. In particular, we investigate fractional factorial designs with 2p-q2p-q runs, noting correspondences to the models for 2p-q2p-q contingency tables.  相似文献

A new multivariate inverse Polya distribution of order k, type I, is derived by means of a generalized urn scheme and by compounding the multivariate negative binomial distribution of order k, type I, of Philippou, Antzoulakos and Tripsiannis (1988) with the Dirichlet distribution. It is noted that this new distribution includes as special cases a new multivariate inverse hypergeometric distribution of order k and a new multivariate negative inverse one of the same order. The mean and variance-covariance of the multivariate inverse Polya distribution of order k, type I, are derived, and two known distributions of the same order are shown to be limiting cases of it.  相似文献

We investigate the Bayes estimation of the means in Poisson decomposable graphical models. Some classes of Bayes estimators are provided which improve on the maximum likelihood estimator under the normalized squared error loss. Both proper and improper priors are included in the proposed classes of priors. Concerning the generalized Bayes estimators with respect to the improper priors, we address their admissibility.  相似文献

Pathological gambling (PG) is characterized by continual repeated gambling behavior despite negative consequences. PG is considered to be a disorder of altered decision-making under risk, and behavioral economics tools were utilized by studies on decision-making under risk. At the same time, PG was suggested to be a heterogeneous disorder in terms of personality traits as well as risk attitude. We aimed to examine the heterogeneity of PG in terms of loss aversion, which means that a loss is subjectively felt to be larger than the same amount of gain. Thirty-one male PG subjects and 26 male healthy control (HC) subjects underwent a behavioral economics task for estimation of loss aversion and personality traits assessment. Although loss aversion in PG subjects was not significantly different from that in HC subjects, distributions of loss aversion differed between PG and HC subjects. HC subjects were uniformly classified into three levels (low, middle, high) of loss aversion, whereas PG subjects were mostly classified into the two extremes, and few PG subjects were classified into the middle range. PG subjects with low and high loss aversion showed a significant difference in anxiety, excitement-seeking and craving intensity. Our study suggested that PG was a heterogeneous disorder in terms of loss aversion. This result might be useful for understanding cognitive and neurobiological mechanisms and the establishment of treatment strategies for PG.  相似文献
