Functional Upgrading and Value Capture of Multinational Subsidiaries

This paper investigates the relationship between the value capture of multinational subsidiaries and functional upgrading, which is defined as a diversification of employment from primary business functions to higher value adding activities such as ICT, R&D, marketing or logistics. By combining survey-based business function indicators with longitudinal accounting data for a representative sample of multinational subsidiaries located in six Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs), we assess the impact of functional upgrading on foreign subsidiaries' value capture. The results provide robust evidence that the breadth as well as the scope of functional upgrading induces an upward shift of subsidiaries' value added. The effect of functional upgrading is stronger in the earlier phases after entry of the foreign investor, while the long-term growth trend remains unaffected.     

Regulatory Institutional Distance and MNCs' Subsidiary Performance: Climbing up Vs. Climbing Down the Institutional Ladder

We investigate the possibility of regulatory institutional distance exerting an asymmetric effect on multinational corporations' (MNCs') subsidiary performance depending on the direction of institutional distance. We use the term ‘institutional ladder’ to differentiate between upward distance, referred to as when the subsidiary is operating in a relatively stronger institutional environment than its parent-firm's home country, and downward distance for vice versa. Combining institutional theory with organisational imprinting and learning perspectives, we argue that the implications of regulatory institutional distance on subsidiary performance are relatively more positive (or less negative) when MNCs are climbing down the institutional ladder as compared to when MNCs are climbing up the institutional ladder. We also argue that subsidiary ownership strategy – i.e. the choice of a wholly owned subsidiary (WOS) versus joint venture (JV) – moderates the above-mentioned implications of institutional distance on subsidiary performance. We test these hypotheses based on a panel data-set of 1936 foreign subsidiaries representing 70 host countries and 66 home countries and spanning the 12-year period: 2002–2013.     

改革攻坚:对当代中国改革一个重大基本问题的分析

改革攻坚源发于我国后发现代化语境下政治权力主导的渐进改革模式。改革攻坚是针对处于体制核心领域即政治权力系统中严重阻滞改革进一步深化的消极因素而言的。这些消极因素包括实体因素、体制因素与具体问题因素三个相互交织、相互强化的层次。改革攻坚意味着政治权力系统必须针对自身深化改革,进一步增强自身的制度规范性与治理有效性。中国改革大致在20世纪90年代中后期进入攻坚阶段。     

中国京剧在海外的传播与影响——翻译与传播京剧跨文化交流的对策研究

中国京剧在海外的有效传播是当代中国文化走向世界的重要战略。自京剧从1919年在海外传播以来,已有近百年历史,可以划分为三个阶段,并产生了重要影响。全球化背景下,中国京剧在海外的传播方式发生了新的变化,既体现了京剧艺术的独特魅力,同时中国京剧在海外的传播也存在一些问题。本课题组进行了英语翻译对京剧在海外传播的有效性实证考察,提出了促进中国京剧在海外传播和跨文化交流的对策。     

政府间与非政府间国际组织在全球环境治理中的有效性评估

全球环境治理是当今国际社会的重要议题,其治理主体呈现多元化趋势,治理模式也由原有的国家中心治理模式向有限治理模式、网络治理模式发展,呈现多方向的新变化。除国家政府之外,就国际组织而言可分成政府间国际组织(IGO)与非政府间国际组织(INGO)两种。文章将探究在全球环境治理问题上是否政府间国际组织可以替代非政府组织的作用,并以绿色和平与联合国环境规划署两大组织为例,从国际社会对全球环境治理体制的功能需求方面进行案例对比分析与治理有效性的评估。     

母公司对子公司的管理和控制模式研究

现代大型企业集团的出现,形成了集团母公司与下属各子公司(包括参股公司)之间复杂的组织结构与关系网络。由于母公司与子公司都是平等的企业法人,因此母公司如何对子公司进行有效的管理,发挥集团的整体优势,就成为理论界与企业界普遍关心的问题。本文对目前理论界和企业界所采取的母公司对子公司的管理和控制模式进行了研究。     

The influence of network structures of Wikipedia discussion pages on the efficiency of WikiProjects

As a platform for discussion and communication, talk pages play an essential role in Wikipedia to facilitate coordination, sharing of information and knowledge resources among Wikipedians. In this work we explore the influence of network structures of these pages on the efficiency of WikiProjects. Project efficiency is measured as the amount of work done by project members in a quarter. The study uses the comments on WikiProject talk pages to construct communication networks. The structural properties of these networks are studied using ideas from social network theory. We develop three hypotheses about how network structures influence project effectiveness and examine the hypotheses using a longitudinal dataset of 362 WikiProjects. The evaluation suggests that an intermediate level of cohesion with a core of influential users dominating network flow improves effectiveness for a WikiProject, and that greater average membership tenure relates to project efficiency in a positive way. We discuss the implications of this analysis for the future management of WikiProjects.
