Motor Vehicles in China: The Impact of Demographic and Economic Changes

While China's transportation sector is relatively small compared to other nations—both in absolute terms and relative to the size of the population—the nation is currently experiencing one of the highest annual motorization growth rates in the world. This rapid growth has raised both excitement among business leaders over the potentially enormous market for automobiles and concern among environmentalists over their further impact on the global environment. This paper examines the influence of population growth, increased urbanization, and economic development on the rapid growth of motor vehicles in China, and considers their implications for future motor vehicle growth in the country.

Price Versus Quantity: Market-Clearing Mechanisms When Consumers are Uncertain about Quality

High-quality producers in a market where quality varies can reap superior profits by charging higher prices, selling greater quantities, or both. Empirical analyses of the mutual fund and automobile industries show that high-quality producers sell more units than their low-quality competitors, but at no higher price (or retail markup) per unit. Our theoretical models find that if qualities are known by consumers and production costs are constant, then having a higher quality secures the producer both higher price and higher quantity. The market may clear in a different fashion if there is "quality uncertainty"; that is, if some consumers can discern quality but others cannot. Then, high- and low-quality producers may end up setting a common price, which allows the high-quality producer to sell substantially more. In this context, quality begets quantity.     

人工智能时代的刑法关切:自动驾驶汽车造成的犯罪及其认定

针对自动驾驶汽车造成的犯罪，需要根据刑法作出具体的认定。如果自动驾驶汽车由于行驶造成他人伤亡、数额较大的财物毁坏，应先确定行为主体。辅助驾驶型自动驾驶汽车的行为主体是辅助驾驶人，完全自动型驾驶汽车的行为主体是汽车生产商。在认定辅助驾驶型自动驾驶汽车造成的犯罪时，根据辅助驾驶人所具备故意或过失的具体形式，其驾驶行为构成不同的犯罪。在认定完全自动型自动驾驶汽车造成的犯罪时，汽车生产商的行为只能构成过失致人死亡罪或过失致人重伤罪且只能是作为犯，定罪的核心在于汽车生厂商的注意义务和注意能力。     

Auto Therapy: Using Automobiles as Vehicles for Reminiscence With Older Adults

Reminiscence can be beneficial for older adults and contribute to well-being and ego integrity. In this exploratory pilot study, researchers assessed the feasibility and tolerability of a novel reminiscence intervention using automobiles as the focal point. Nineteen older adults (N = 19) were asked to reminisce using photographs of automobiles from across their lifespan. The RE-AIM framework was used to assess the intervention in terms of reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance. The intervention was well-received, quickly established rapport, and effectively fostered reminiscence. Social workers may find this intervention useful in helping older adults to explore their lives.     

国外汽车消费社会学研究述评

汽车深深地改变了人们的日常生活。在国外,汽车消费社会学作为一个新的研究领域正引起广泛的注意。本文较为系统地梳理了国外近年来汽车研究的相关文献,并从汽车的文化逻辑、汽车的符号批判、汽车与城市空间、汽车与日常生活实践以及公共交通和私人交通等五个方面回顾了布迪厄、法兰克福学派、巴特、布希亚、列斐伏尔、雅各布斯、北村隆一、厄里、费舍斯通、米勒,以及其他一些后现代理论家对汽车的相关阐述。最后,本文就汽车消费社会学研究的未来趋势及其对国内研究的启发提出了一些看法。
