CULTIVATING SOCIETY'S CIVIC INTELLIGENCE: PATTERNS FOR A NEW 'WORLD BRAIN'

In spite of remarkable advances in science and technology, humankind is beset with a number of serious problems. These are not just problems that 'won't go away'; they are problems that are worsening considerably. These problems include the growing gap between rich and poor, between those who have too much and those who have too little, as well as a broad range of environmental issues that may have major consequences but, at the same time, are little understood. This essay explores the idea of 'civic intelligence'. What projects, perspectives, policy and technology might humankind develop that would help us collectively address these problems? This essay discusses six aspects of 'civic intelligence' (orientation, organization, engagement, intelligence, products and projects, and resources) as well as ways to make cultivating our 'civic intelligence' a practical - non-utopian - enterprise.

随着传媒市场的日益成熟,媒体逐渐成为公共讨论和提供信息的平台,并日益成为建构我国公共领域的重要力量。本文从大众传媒与公共领域的关系入手,结合我国传媒发展历史和实践,梳理我国传媒建构公共领域的艰难历程,并就我国传媒公共领域建构的现实路径进行初浅探讨。     

公德与私德辨正

梁启超开启了以公德与私德这对概念来讨论中国文化和中国问题的先河,此后该主题引起了学界普遍而持久的探讨。梁启超、梁漱溟和李泽厚这三个不同时代的思想家对公德私德有着不同的理解,尤其是关于公德的理解分歧颇大,梁启超的公德论侧重国家伦理,梁漱溟的公德论侧重团体生活,李泽厚的公德论强则调个体权利的优先性。当今学界尤其关注公德私德之划分的标准问题,在诸多划分标准中,引入公共领域与私人领域的概念区分作为划分公德与私德的标准最为根本,它有助于澄清公德与私德的本质和特征以及它的施及范围,有助于论定儒学是否缺乏公德和日常生活中的道德判断和评价,亦有助于现代社会公德观念的型塑。     

Extreme shape analysis

Summary.  We consider the analysis of extreme shapes rather than the more usual mean- and variance-based shape analysis. In particular, we consider extreme shape analysis in two applications: human muscle fibre images, where we compare healthy and diseased muscles, and temporal sequences of DNA shapes from molecular dynamics simulations. One feature of the shape space is that it is bounded, so we consider estimators which use prior knowledge of the upper bound when present. Peaks-over-threshold methods and maximum-likelihood-based inference are used. We introduce fixed end point and constrained maximum likelihood estimators, and we discuss their asymptotic properties for large samples. It is shown that in some cases the constrained estimators have half the mean-square error of the unconstrained maximum likelihood estimators. The new estimators are applied to the muscle and DNA data, and practical conclusions are given.     

PUBLIC PEDAGOGY AS CULTURAL POLITICS: STUART HALL AND THE CRISIS OF CULTURE

This article argues that Stuart Hall's work provides an important theoretical framework for developing an expanded notion of public pedagogy, for making the pedagogical central to any understanding of political agency, and for addressing the primacy of public pedagogy and cultural politics in any viable theory of social change. Hall's work becomes particularly important not only in making education crucial to the practice of cultural studies, but also in providing a theoretical and political corrective to recent attacks on cultural politics, which cut across ideological lines and include theorists as politically diverse as Harold Bloom, Richard Rorty and Todd Gitlin.
