Abstract.  We propose covariate adjusted correlation (Cadcor) analysis to target the correlation between two hidden variables that are observed after being multiplied by an unknown function of a common observable confounding variable. The distorting effects of this confounding may alter the correlation relation between the hidden variables. Covariate adjusted correlation analysis enables consistent estimation of this correlation, by targeting the definition of correlation through the slopes of the regressions of the hidden variables on each other and by establishing a connection to varying-coefficient regression. The asymptotic distribution of the resulting adjusted correlation estimate is established. These distribution results, when combined with proposed consistent estimates of the asymptotic variance, lead to the construction of approximate confidence intervals and inference for adjusted correlations. We illustrate our approach through an application to the Boston house price data. Finite sample properties of the proposed procedures are investigated through a simulation study.  相似文献

This paper discusses a class of tests of lack-of-fit of a parametric regression model when design is non-random and uniform on [0,1]. These tests are based on certain minimized distances between a nonparametric regression function estimator and the parametric model being fitted. We investigate asymptotic null distributions of the proposed tests, their consistency and asymptotic power against a large class of fixed and sequences of local nonparametric alternatives, respectively. The best fitted parameter estimate is seen to be n1/2-consistent and asymptotically normal. A crucial result needed for proving these results is a central limit lemma for weighted degenerate U statistics where the weights are arrays of some non-random real numbers. This result is of an independent interest and an extension of a result of Hall for non-weighted degenerate U statistics.  相似文献

Recursive and closed form upper bounds are offered for the Kolmogorov and the total variation distance between the standard normal distribution and the distribution of a standardized sum of n independent and identically distributed random variables. The method employed is a modification of the method of compositions along with Zolotarev's ideal metric. The approximation error in the CLT obtained vanishes at a rate O(nk/2+1), provided that the common distribution of the summands possesses an absolutely continuous part, and shares the same k−1 (k?3) first moments with the standard normal distribution. Moreover, for the first time, these new uniform Berry-Esseen-type bounds are asymptotically optimal, that is, the ratio of the true distance to the respective bound converges to unity for a large class of distributions of the summands. Thus, apart from the correct rate, the proposed error estimates incorporate an optimal asymptotic constant (factor). Finally, three illustrative examples are presented along with numerical comparisons revealing that the new bounds are sharp enough even to be used in practical statistical applications.  相似文献
